NISMO flywheel review
Well it's in the car at last!
I've only driven it for 1 hr so this is kind of my initial impression.
For starters the ease to rev is obvious but not over the top. The move from the 28lbs to 22lbs is nice as you don't have to re-learn to drive the car (i hear the tilton is a biatch). But you get the benefit of easy rev matching and you get up on power faster.
It cured a noise my stock flywheel was spitting out at low rpm. And introduced a minor bit of "chatter" around the 1500rpm range. (I mean very very minor, and very low volume)
Now let me say. I was looking for that noise.
If you just got in the car it would seem to be quiet and far more compliant than stock.
Overall in the first hour i can say this was the best $ mod i've made so far. Yet thats because I got it so cheap. Thnx 350zlover for the great product.
I'll get the chance to redline it through the gears soon and post my thoughts on that.
Flywheel= thumbs up!

Good to see that you're happy with it.
I saw the video of a tacho revving with the Tilton flywheel and that thing spins up in milliseconds. But I read it is also noisy and as you said a little more difficult to get the car moving without stalling.
Nismo may be a nice compromise between the stock wheel and the extreme Tilton wheel (ie not noisy or difficult to drive but better rev up probably giving back a little power from drivetrain losses at the flywheel).

great to hear that you are very happy with it
But i wonder how is your Stock flywheel produce noise?
Mine is damn quiet now from Nismo Flywheel to stock. even at Idle after driving it hard or even with the A/C turned on my Nismo Flywheels is chattering noisyly.
Btw Zuff you got a hi-tech exhaust as well right?
Also the different feel from Nismo Flywheel to stock. I gain Lower RPM power and torque as i have lost it on the Nismo Flywheel (IMO). BUt i lost the Mid range RPM power and torque from Nismo Flywheel after going back to stock.

Zuff:
Good to hear that you love it!! and yes.... I do miss the flywheel's faster revving and also the car actually became really easy to drive especially from 1st to 2nd.... but not the noise though... I guess the noise will actually get louder if the clutch gets worn out more.... because ypwat's clutch got worn out than mine, and his chattering noise is about 5 times louder at idle I would say....
But anyway.... enjoy the new feeling!!!
cheers,
richie

oh.... when you redline the car, you might notice that you will have less wheel spin due to the rev drops off a lot quicker than before (during fast shifting and dump the clutch)... you will need to do this gear changing action A LOT faster to be able to perform the stock wheel spin effect... that's what I found when I redline the car.... but hey.... if I can get the approval from my better half, I will get a light weight flywheel in my car any day, it is just way too much fun to drive the car!!

Good to hear you are happy with it so far. Interested to hear your final thoughts. I am thinking about going with this or a Cusco twin plate clutch/flywheel combo. Lets see if you can convince me
I would have personaly gone for the JUN flywheel and upgraded clutch but this was a price compromise.
To add to the flywheel arguement is the fact that it's not a visible mod. Ie you can't really be pulled up for it.
Also i've noticed the hi-tech sounds different with this flywheel (much better in fact). No loss of torque felt. Maybe i'll dyno in the next few months.

Yeah, that was the other one I was looking at. I want to go for both the clutch and flywheel, but I am also thinking about just the nismo flywheel because I have a friend that can hook me up with discounted nismo parts. If you seem happy with it in terms of a price compromise, I may also just opt for the flywheel...decisions, decisions!
Actually, when I order something through him, I'll let you know and I can place an order for you. The only problem is I cannot give you an accurate price on anything until we are ready to order. He works at a nissan dealership and offers me cost price. Could you PM me the price you paid for your Nismo flywheel?
My reasoning of the chatter "noise"
The standard Z flywheel is a dual mass fly where it has internal movement to make enaging easier and smother.
The problem I believe is the standard Z clutch does NOT have the clutch springs on the centre plate hence the dual mass flywheel.
So if buying a single mass fly then it should be matched with a sprung centre clutch not solid.
PS: I have not seen the standard clutch plate so I'm assuming it does not have a sprung centre.

oh... the standard clutch does have springs at the centre..... 4 of them....
RISK:
with the flywheel, the engagement is even easier though, at least that is what I found.... and it makes the driving a lot easier as I mentioned from 1st to 2nd.... less jerky feeling even you let go the clutch fast...

The flywheel makes engaging and general gear changing much easier and smoother. I wasn't annoyed at that before, it just feels like a better match.
Getting a bit more noise today... i've noticed it happens when you are in a high gear for the relevant speed and put on quite a bit of load. Eg. 3rd gear on an incline with 1500 rpm... it doesn't like that.

zuff, you are correct on that... if your exhaust isn't loud enough to cover the noise, cruising at 1500rpm isn't a good idea, so once you hear the noise, that means that you need to downshift to get the power up... you might also notice more constant noise on the hot day or after you drive the car HARD... I don't know what is that related to though...
BTW.... can you be able to weight the Standard flywheel weight?! I weighted the nismo one and it is EXACTLY 10KG.... but just didn't have chance to do it to the stock flywheel....
Thanks for your help in advance!

Well i've had time to get used to this mod.
Definitly noisy after a big ride. Did the Royal National Park at quite a pace and also went up the Blue mountains for a fun run.
It must expand with the heat or something. Noisy biatch until it cools down again. Perfectly fine for me with my quick 30min drives all over town.
If you plan on a lightened flywheel i'd consider the JUN as it's not aluminium and thus probably doesn't have the same issue. Well Peter reckons his is as quiet as a mouse.
I don't think it'll change much (ie get any worse
) but this isn't a mod for people who get the ***** with a little noise every time you take off at the lights once the car is running real hot. There is no noise after 1500rpm... so it's only a 1st gear thing.
In short, i doubt i could go back to a stock flywheel...noise or no noise.

lol...maybe his is noisy when he has the ***** and quiet when he's in a good mood. Seems about the same as my Nismo flywheel.
He definitly told me his doesn't make any noticable noise. You must consider that his car is bloody loud though.... and Pete's not getting any younger...ehhh! just joking! ;D

... last time Peter told me his JUN is noisy as well, just that he's a race car so he doesnt care
