Question Wheel question

Posted this in the general section but no one has answered so thought that I should try here as well.

I am thinking about some 18 inch rims for my car (in particular 18x8 and 18x9).

My question is about offsets.

Has anyone run 35mm offset all of the way around?

Will they fit the car?
Will they looked to tucked?

If anyone happens to have a picture of this combination it would be of great help.

Thanks,

Zdster

I think the front is going to be tucked, since the stock front 18" wheel has 30mm offset. The rear should be ok. I'm planning to get 18x9 all round with +35mm offset.

Zdster, isn't your car come with 18" rims standard? If you going to change wheel, should go for 19"x9 front and 19"x10 rear :P

LemanZ,

I was to cheap to buy a track 350z.

Instead, I thought that I would get a touring and upgrade the wheels. The only problem for me with 19" wheels is the cost of tyres

Nuff, thanks for the response.

Does anyone have any pictures of an 8" wide wheel with a 35 offset?? That would be of much help.

The stock offset on the track in the front is 30mm.

I had a look in the owners manual and the front wheel is only 7.5" wide, so I am wondering how an extra 0.5" wide wheel combined with an extra 5mm on the offset will look.

I have a Touring (but I bought a set of Track rims on the cheap)

Its strange how the Touring has:

F 17 x 7.5 225/50
R 17 x 8.0 235/50

And the Track has

F 18 x 8.0 225/45
R 18 x 8.0 245/45

So the car with different sized-rims has a smaller front / rear tyre width difference.

When I replace my rims, I'm probably going to go 17 x 9.0 all round....depending on the cost difference while getting rims that will fit the widest possible RT215's. I also want a deep dish look, so I'll be going for the smallest possible offset.

Call me silly! I though the track had 8.5's on the rear??

As always

Same!

But, that's not what it says here, nor what it says in the manual that came with my Touring.

I didn't check the rims themselves when I put them on yesterday, so they could be wrong.

I just rechecked my manual.

The widest offset is 33 on the rear of the touring model that has a 17x8 rear.

So, do you think that 18x8 front, with a 35mm offset will look any good?

IMO The wheel arches are too big for 17", they would look ugly. You'd have to lower it a long way to make it look better and then the car would hit/scrap on everything.

To be quite honest, I'm not that big a fan of the way a 350Z looks anyway. It has grown on me, but it wasn't love at first sight.

Yes, the 18" wheels do fill the guards better, but I can't get road legal semi-slicks on a rim bigger than 17". In the end, the wheel is there to hold the rubber. I'm also not too fond of the ride on the Track rims (although I realise if I replace the suspension, it may help cure the issue). Still, if I have to choose between better vehicle performance and a pretty holder, I'll take performance if they're mutually exclusive (and it appears so, in this case).

Horses for courses......

You didnt/dont like the way the 350z looks. Ok.

The Track rims are nothing special just cast normal wheels, the Rays forged wheels that are an option from the dealership are better 'Track' wheels.

Some comments were made on the actual performance of the RT215's in comparision to other tyres on and off the track which might help in increasing your tyre choice and in return wheel choice.

Its mentioned at the bottom of this page.

Yes, I know they're nothing special. They're factory rims.

The point is they're 18", so the tyres only provide a certain level of damping when it comes to surface irregularities. While a lighter rim and re-tuned suspension may alleviate this (something I've admitted), the rim's still solid and so its the tyre that absorbs bumps. So, in that respect, it doesn't matter who makes them.

As for the tyres, I suppose it could be different on the 350Z. On my last car, I found the RT215's to clearly stick better than other choices once they've warmed up, including the S02 and S03. So have people driving S14s and S15s.

I'll put RT215's on the Touring rims as my next tyre choice, and then try the S03's after that (or maybe some other semi-slick like the A032R's or D01J's). I'll find out for myself, and my style of driving, what provides better grip and comfort.

The other thing is cost, and that I can't afford to buy 18" tyres with the rate at which I chew them up.

Yep thats cool. I know where your coming from in regards to cost.

It will be a while before you get to your next choice of tyres but its worth noting that David does not think the S03s are that good for outright performance but are good when cost and performance are taken into consideration.

Yeah, and that's my problem. I can't afford to constantly change my tyres around.

I consider the RT215's to be $500 a corner tyres (Temple of Chrome sells them at $250 each) since they wear out about twice as fast as normal street tyres.

I may try getting a set of nicer rims (at the moment I'm split between something from Volk's line, and the Racing Hart C4's) and putting the RT215's on that. Drive them around as my hooning / summer tyre, and then keep the factory 17" rims with S03's (or maybe even just RE040's) as the "winter" tyre, or when I don't have any cruises or track events planned.

We'll see how much money I have when the RE040's on my Track rims wear out.
