350Z exhaust, warranty conflictions?
Hi... a friend of mine has a 350Z and has been interested in puting on a new exhaust, but as the car is virtually brand new, he is quite worried about what it will do to the 3 year warranty.
When i first registered on this forum way back, I can vaguely remember some talk about an exhaust system that could be fitted through nissan dealerships, that did not alter the warranty at all. As I said, it has perhaps a full year since I have last been to this forum so my memory is sketchy... I think it was called the "Hi tech" system. Alas, I have tried searching and found nothing in reguard to this.
Though my friend uses the car alot, it is technically his fathers, so any exhaust work would have to be done through a nissan workshop, keeping things 100% by the book.
So yeah, can anyone clear this up? the AUDM spec exhaust is painfully restrictive, so it would be a shame to have to drive the car around for a whole 3 years before it can be changed.
thanks..

It is all up to the dealer whether or not they want to continue the warranty.... Even with Hi-Tech as they are all considered as After market modifications.... My dealer is cool about what I have done so far, but when I move onto the engine mods, I will just need to say bye bye to my warranty...
You are right about the the "factory-fitted" option, but it only happens in the States as they can opt for nismo exhaust and fitted by the dealer while maintaining their factory warranty.... This does not apply to any Zed bought in Australia even though I have nismo exhaust fitted!
cheers,
richie

I contacted Nissan australia regarding modifications and your warranty. No modification will void your entire cars warranty, if you have a specific problem with the car and Nissan believes a modification you did is the cause, then they will not fix that particular problem under warranty, and the rest of the cars warranty stays in tact.
Example, if you have modified suspension and your head gasket blows (part of the engine) they will fix that problem under warranty because the cause of the damage could not have been related to the suspension change. But if you had a Twin Turbo installed and the head gasket blew, then they would not fix it under warranty as it would most likely the turbos causing the damage.
Now bare in mind that different service centres could possibly have their own opinions on these sort of things and if you find one which doesnt like them, then I would suggest trying another one.
I have modified suspension, intake, crank pulley, hitech exhaust and just recently my gearbox had issues and needed to be replaced. They did not mention any of my modifications and replaced the gearbox, clutch assembly, clutch pedal at no cost to me. And they are aware of the modifications

What I usually do is, before each modification, I will call my Nissan service centre (and the insurance company) and tell them exactly what I'm planning on doing, and then asking what happens. Based on what they tell me, I decide.
Hence why I fitted my HiTech cat-back, but I won't be looking at getting extractors until the warranty expires.
When you call the service centre, make sure you call twice and get two different people. When you call the insurance company, get a call reference number and ask them to read back the call notes.

I don't think the dealers mind particularly who pays them, including Nissan Aust...
