Default Which Brake Rotors?

Ok well, its coming to the point where after the next 1 or 2 track days, I am going to need new brake rotors. I am now going to ask the forum's opinion on this expensive purchase. I have the OEM Brembo Kit and run Nismo pads on the street, Cobalt pads on the track.

Slotted, Drilled, both, or neither?

What brand?

Where to buy?

I am looking for the most bang for the buck not the best for track only, not the cheapest, but a good set of rotors that aren't rediculously overpriced. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, if I needed a new set of rotors, I'd definitely go with the Stoptech 2pc. slotted. These are a little pricey initially but the next time they need replacing you'll be glad you went with them. As far as vendors go, I'd start with Jason@Peformance and Paul@Avalon. They seem to had good deals. Also Greg@GSCMotorsports.

I always thought slotted was better but after speaking to a Stoptech employee he recommend regular rotors that were not slotted or drilled. He said the more material the better. This wasn't my opinion but I am sure he knows more about brakes than I do.

^^^Thats wierd since I havent seen anything but slotted or drilled from Stoptech. You think that they would use the best idea for their own products.

He was speaking about best performance for track use. The drilled rotors are mainly for looks since they can crack under race conditions. The guy from Stoptech said you could use the slotted for race conditions but he thought the solid rotors were best for that use. Of course I have bought my kit with the slotted rotors and I am very pleased with them but I am just repeating what he told me.

I understand, I just have never heard of that before. I knew that drilled crack under extreme heat, but I thought that solid rotors were also subject to vapor lock and overheating.

Never heard that either. I always thought slotted was better for racing but when I went to the IRL race they had solid rotors also. Then again they use a carbon fiber composite for rotors. It would be interesting if someone has more technical info as to why slotted or solid is better for racing.

I thought slotted and/or drilled rotors were best because they allow for better cooling in extreme heat (breaking) conditions preventing damage to the rotors?

This makes sence to me. As does more material for better performance. Personally (probably cause I'm cheap ) I'd go with slotted &/or drilled to save wear and because they look so good.

don't most high end performance cars have drilled & slotted rotors?

Good post tabrizio. That article pretty much says that slotted is the way to go.

i can speak to the cracking of drilled rotors, as mine have them. i definately will not get drilled rotors again for this very reason. i do, however, plan on getting slotted brakes, mainly for the razor blade effect which keeps the pad surface new. while increasing pad wear somewhat, it is definatley worth the better feel.

does anyone know how much the replacement rotor is for the 2-piece stoptech? i can find prices for the entire rotor and hat assembly, but not for the rotor only.

I believe they are around $300 for the front pair.

ok. so for about $1000 i can get the two-piece stoptechs and replace the rotors once. for about $900, i can get two pairs of the brake pros rotors. therefore, i would need to be using the car in a way that would have me replacing the rotors at least three times before getting the stoptech's makes a cost difference.

as far as performance difference, i'm sure the stoptech's would at the very least cool better.

Brake Pro slotted are a good option for track use. OEM replacement is just ridiculous priced Let me know if you guys need anything...I can get 'em ordered for ya.

I have a brand new set of the brake pro rotors, slotted 2-piece fronts and 1-piece rears, if you are interested, pm me. I never installed them because I didn't like the rear look. I got them from Paul at Avalon.

Man I would jump on that, but I don't need them right away.
