Anyone heading to Indy...
An F1 race is definitely something every speed junkie should experience. I drove up to Montreal for last year's GP, and it was worth every penny (then again Canada is cheaper than the US and Montreal > Indiana... haha). Have fun!
Kyle,
You are going to have a blast. This'll be my third year in a row for the USGP. This is the only race on the calendar where the pits will open... on Thursday for walk throughs (8AM-Noon)... and if you re-up your tickets on Monday, you get to drive the course... and I understand it's at a fairly sporting clip too.
The first year I went, I couldn't see the need to buy the parking pass... lucked out and got one on Friday night, the other lots had sold out... so I had a long hike from Lot 3 to the Penthouse Paddock. Not that I minded... I got to cruise through the whole facility each morning and evening. And the people are really accomodating. When I read "No Pass Outs" on the ticket, I figured; "Hey, I'm not going to drink that much"... and exited the park to jetison my rain gear... the guys at the gate explained what "No Pass Outs" really meant... and let me back in anyhow.
Got crunched, elevated and used as a human observation deck by a wild pack of female Columbians when Montoya was signing autographs, his wife Connie hung out for another hour, she was way cool to the fans. I stayed at the Embassy Suites downtown, Mercedes/McLaren Headquarters... way cool, way expensive $500 p/night (for others, I used points to stay).
Last year, I learned that I should've been there for the pit walks on Thursday and track drive on Monday. The Grid Girls tolerated many photo opts with us too... several times per day.
For dining pleasures, I recommend a huge turkey leg in one hand and a Foster's in the other... experience a primal treat. Stayed at the Sheraton @ Keystone Crossing, I think that was 17 miles away, no traffic to slow us down... no problems getting back and forth. Near a mall, martini bar, etc. I think it was $189 p/night.
This year, so far... this race is actually cheaper than the Canadian GP, for us on the west coast, but I'm sure the added cost wouldn't keep me from doing that race as well:
* The USGP's highest priced ticket is $150 vs. $465
* Airfare: $250-300 from Seattle
* Hotel: $87 (Priceline.com, plus taxes, etc. too cheap to expend points on) Hilton, Indy North... Karting track nearby... 27 miles from the track, but we leave so early everyday, there isn't any traffic.
Sorry for the long post, but I'm so excited about going again this year, I can't hardly sleep at night. It's cool bringing someone along to their first F1 race, you see them go through the same phases you went through, your first time... the volume of the sound, the sound of 19,000 RPM, the visuals... simply unreal freakin' believable. You'll want to go to more F1 events from here on out.

Cool! You and your dad are definitely going to have a great time. I'll be there for my fourth consecutive year, and I can't wait. Three more weeks!!
Gotta love those packs of Colombian women cheering for Montoya... can't take three steps without running into one!

Also, the cost of $130 USD for 3 days of tickets is incredible! Montreal is far more expensive and a lot less accessible (getting around the track etc...). Having said that, Montreal is a fantastic city with awesome culture, if you haven't been there you must check it out.
