Exclamation autocrossers - what type/size of slicks?

Hey all, next car for me is the 06 350z. I have driven a few and love the handling capabilities. I currently run an 03 Civic Si on slicks. But I know hte 06's are coming with 18's now.

What tires are you guys using for slicks, and are you going on stock rims or a aftermarket/smaller size rim ?.... 18" slicks = $$$$

For stock you need to keep the same size wheels (diameter and width) and within 1/4" of the same offset.

I'd hold off getting new tires until you're more comfortable with the car, and also to see what options will be available for 2006.

I run Hoosier A3S04s 245/18 front 275/18 rear. They are absolutely awesome. I paid $1050 shipped for all 4. The newer A3S05s are supposed to be better but I have no experience with them and I don't know if the prices are the same either.

I tried a set of A3S05 Hoosiers this spring and they are not as good as to the 710's I run now. The Kuhmos have better traction, wear evenly and last longer. You can also run less air pressure. Too bad they have a limited selection of 18" sizes. I run the 245/35-18 all around but I would like a 275.

I'm running 275/40/17 R-compounds all around. Definitely more stable than my 19" street tire combo...

Try the Toyo RA-1's. Wonderful tires.

I run 275/40-17 Kuhmo V710's all around. I bought them used with 3/32nds left on each. I ran 13 events and the fronts have about 1/32nd left and the rears are gone. I will be buying new 710's next year. It took me 10 events to get the feel of R compounds as I have run street tires the last 3 years. I'll never go back to street tires for autoX . Last two events I finished in the top 25 on index with about 125-150 cars per event.

so to you guys with the 275 slicks on all four, did you find that theres very little forgiveness? Meaning when they break loose their gone. I'm def. going to that set up next season mainly because i have a very stiff suspension setup and I don't think I'll ever use it fully untill I have some slick stick. How much did you have to change your driving style?

The Z is the most forgiving autocross car out there.. if you don't believe me, try an S2000 on R Compounds. The most likely condition you're gonna have is understeer, whether it's on R tires or street tires, so the stories you hear about R tires "just breaking loose all of a sudden" really aren't that bad when you're doing AutoX.

Easiest way to find out for sure is to have someone better take the car for a run or two.. maybe you have a national champ, and/or competitor in your region - they should be able to figure it out real quick, so just ride along and pay attention.

Perhaps it is just me, or that I'm not pushing the car hard enough (or that I'm "tuned" to formula cars), but I find that my Z is very well balanced.

I can induce either understeer or oversteer, and the transition to oversteer is very progressive and controllable. About the only time that I've had "problems" are those that have been induced by surface changes (elevation or liquids).

I dunno...I feel like sometimes it's hard to know exactly when my car is about to break loose. People who I've let co-drive my car seem to agree. Maybe it's just not enough seat time and familiarity with the car though...

Are you still on the oem suspension? If not, what then?

Yes/No. '03 Z springs on stock shocks/struts. Hotchkis Sways. GT-Spec F/R lower tie bars. You think it's more the shocks than rubber?

The stiffer the car's suspension, the less forgiving it is, and the less warning you have before it "goes away."
