Default SCCA Car Setup/ Need help!!!

My car is just about done being stripped down. I want to start racing in the SCCA. I looked at all the classes and T2 seems to be the only one with the 350z in it. I want to build my car before I go to the divers school to get my permit for racing and I was wondering if there was anyone on here in that class that could give me tips for things I need. Also, what mods I can and can't put on my car. Thanks!

I would go to the SCCA Forum page and ask them.

GS is a class for 350z's...and I believe it is a completely stock class, no mods what so ever (even requires the stock wheels). You can do things like new breakpads, air filter, etc (wear items), but it would be the cheapest class to get into.

t2 would be fun!

there are a lot of modifications you can do to prep your car for t2. the most important being an SCCA approved roll cage. others include shocks (i'm not sure whether DAs are legal this year), t2 sway bars, t2 springs, improved brake cooling, cat back exhaust, and i believe the wheel size has been increased to a 9.5" width this year.

i really want to race t2, but i don't think i'll be able to undertake this endeavor until i have the mentality and the financial background to be able to wreck my car one weekend and be OK with it.

www.sccaforums.com is a great place to start.

a cheaper way to get into it is buy tom hoppe's car.. or miranda's, really. it's for sale. 29k.

Default Scca T2

Join SCCA, 1-800-770-2055, they will direct you to what Region you willbe a member of, get a General Competition Rules book, also an application for drivers school and licence. Read the rules for Nissan 350Z preperation in the back of the T2 section which allow you to do certain suspension things specifically. Also read all of the Touring rules and that will tell you what you can do. If it doesnt say you can.........then you cant. You also need to review the roll bar rules. Get a pro to install the roll bar unless you are a professional welder. I dont know where you are but there are several good roll bar fabricators in various parts of the country. Go to www.scca.com and most of the information about the club is in that site. Something important to know is that there is a section called SCCAgarage that each month lists the updated rules, and they change a lot during the first part of the year. You will see things there that pertain to T-2 and you should but those out and keep them with your rule book. You can find all these rules under club racing, cars and rules. Its downloadable but takes a lot of pages to print it. SCCA also has a cd with the rules. Persoanlly I prefer printed rules so I can highlight what I have done and will do. If you want to talk to me call Bob HInes before 10pm EST and I will give you my son's number. We have prepared a couple of successful T-2 cars and now have a brickyard 350Z that we are racing. Depending on what model car you have you can expect to spend between $10k to $18 for everything related to the car. Plan on another $5k for two schools, drivers suit and other safety gear. Dont skimp on the safety stuff. You also need a tow vehicle and a trailer. Good luck with your racing and we hope to see you somewhere. bobhines

I forgot to mention..........stop stripping your car out and read the rules. T-2 required that a lot of the interior stuff remain such as passenger seat, carpets, and most of the plastic interior.

I believe you mean BS and you're talking autocross. The original posted looks to be talking about club racing.

You want to just race or race a 350Z ?

There are some much cheaper alternative to a built 350Z.

My car was in the show scene so I had all kind of stuff installed in it that I don't need. So, I wanted to strip her down to uninstall everything and redo some stuff. I will be able to put it all back together but I just wanted to tear everything down and start fresh.

I agree with Kolia - Track days are fun and safe, yet once you start racing - plan on at least having to replace a body panel or two every season. Let alone, having to pay for new tires all the time.
I would buy some older used car that is easy to find parts in wrecking yards for. That way if you break something you don't cry over it and you can find replacement parts for really cheap. Really can't get around buying tires although. Since the 350Z is still relatively new - you will probably end up buying new parts every time you damage something.

True, sometimes you will have to buy new parts, but what you may not realize, Nissan Motorsports North America has a great parts program so you won't be going to a dealer to pay for parts.

Welcome to T2! Look forward to racing with you.

Regards,
Jason

And get and read the rules BEFORE you start doing mods.

Nothing sucks more than getting the car the way you think you want it only to find out that you have nowhere to play.
