Default Same tire front & rear?

I really need one 225 front to replace the abused left side on my track set. But I do have my street wheels. Can I run the 245 all-around? I don't care about VDC on the track but I do want the ABS to function. Any thoughts or anyone with a used 225/18. Thanks

Default tires

We are now running larger tires on the rear than on the front and things work just fine, in fact the car is handling better. We can sell you a full set of our one weekend take-offs if you want a full set. Call Rob Hines at 703-989-1536.

Nor recommended. VDC will react poorly to the same tire height all around. VDC works properly if the rear tires are 10mm more tall than the front.

I ALWAYS turn VDC off on the track. My street set of rear 245 are fairly worn and would make a good track tire, but my street front are new and have to tall and squirmy tread for track use. So in lieu of a new(used) front, could I run both sets of rears?

VDC and size issues aside... 'worn' street tires do not make good track tires. Sure, you may see more 'rubber' but chances are the compound has heat-cycled out to something thats too hard for any useable grip. You'll be sliding around all day, then you'll cord it and be done for the day, or worse, lose a tire on track

I agree that street tires do not make ideal (or even good) track tires. However, with my stock suspension and HPDE events they do everything I need. With the correct pressures and driving within the tires limits (and my own) I am totally satisified with this setup. I do plan on buying better trackable tires, but not until spring.

Thats not at all what I was saying. Street tires ARE ideal for track use, especially with stock suspension and ESPECIALLY when you're still learning and you skill level is below anything other than instructor... BUT worn street tires are not safe. Thats probably what I should have said.

I should really ask what your definition of worn is. I'm thinking you're talking about street tires with less than a few 32nds of an inch of tread left. If you've got useable tread across the tire's surface, with no bald areas, then you'll probably be fine.

I'm trying to avoid people getting the idea that running bald street tires on track is a good idea

Careful with how quickly you upgrade.

Better tires means bigger brakes and the need for better suspension. It's a slippery and expensive slope modding cars for the track.

If street tires work well and give you enough of a challenge/rush, stick with them for as long as possible.

Personally, I find Kumho MX street tires work fantastic on the track. No chunking or greasing, they wear well, and are relatively inexpensive.

I always run non-stagger tires (track, summer, winter) and with exception to the track (always turn off) I've never had VDC issues. Non stagger has a few significant advantages. It kills a lot of the OEM understeer and it helps tire longetivety being able to rotate them front/rear (and side to side in the case of Kumho MXs).

I run the same size (275/40R17) on all four corners on the track. No problems whatsoever.

It would make an interesting poll to see how many people run same diameter tires in all four corners and have problems with the VDC. I'm running same diameter Falken RT-615's all around and haven't had any issues. I know some other people who have had the same results.
Is the tire diameter/VDC trouble thing a myth?
We need to contact Mythbusters on this.

Hey 12AutoX,
What size 615's are you running? Those were my choice come spring. I'm on the OEM tracks

I have 18x8.5 front wheels and 18x9.5 rears (BBS RGR).
265/45/18 front, 275/45/18 rear. The fronts are "reinforced sidewall", and have the same track width as the 275's. The diameter is just a tad smaller on the fronts, to the point of being negligible. I have a couple thousand highway miles on them, and I'm going to track them next weekend for the first time. If you're on stock wheels, I don't know if 275's will work.
