Default brake pad wear on road course

I participated in 2x HPDE type events with brand new Nismo R Tune brake pads on stoptech slotted rotors (non-Brembo)
(I did bed the rotors in with these pads, and I am on street tires)

Now supposedly I am down to 30% pad left front and 40% left rear.
(Besides the 2 track days with each about 4x 20min sessions, roughly only 1000 miles of street driving)

Does that sound about right? Could I expect a lot more with different pads?
Like that, it looks like if I go any faster and want some safety margin on the track, I'll have to change pads every 2 events? Seems kind of steep?

Thanks!

Welcome to slotted rotors! They "keep the pads cleaner", at the expense of basically grinding them...

Depending on your driving style, that could also happen on plain rotors. Over heating the brakes will do that too.

Try and run on plain rotors next time. You can get them as a special order from StopTech.

My Cobalt Friction SpecVR pads lasted 6 track days, about 1000 miles of track.

Ah, and I don't recommand doing an other event with these pads. Maybe one session, but no more. Make sure to inspect them (take them out of the caliper) if you do that.

Predoosan...

That sounds about right, especially if these were your 1st two track events. You'll eventually learn to use your brakes more efficiently as you progress (i.e. using them harder, but in shorter distances) which will help you save your pads and rotors... but until then, you will go through pads pretty quickly.

My guess is the Nismo R-tune pads are a moderate street/track compound pas, ala Hawk HPs ... the wear you described is head and shoulders better than most 350Zs experience on stock pads (non-brembos) so don't be discouraged. Do however, follow Kolia's advice on going ahead and changing to a newer set of pads (at least in front). I'd suggest keeping these as emergency back-ups.

Do a search for track brake pads here and you should find lots of threads with many many suggestions. Since you're on street tires, I'd suggest staying with a dual purpose pad, or a light-duty track pad. In panic braking situations, track pads can quickly overload street tires and compound any pucker situation you might find yourself in.

Thanks for the advice!

One more question:
How bad is it really to use different pads on the same rotors?
(stock pads on stoptech rotors that were bedded in with nismo pads)

I still have the stock rotors & pads which shouldn't be in too bad shape.

I got the slotted stoptech rotors because I thought it will reduce brake fade... and the nismo pads would eat up the stock rotors....
But I guess now my rotors are eating up the pads

Looking at Courtesy Nissan's Nismo parts page, the R-tune pads are rated at 600-700 degrees (I assume thats max temp) which is definitely a dual purpose compound (as opposed to some race compounds with an operating temp range from 500-1200 degrees). Plus they say they are 'rotor friendly' FWIW. They sure are priced like race pads though ... what I'm saying is, it doesn't surprise me that the rotors are winning out in this case.

As far as different pads on the same rotors... it depends on who you ask (like most things)... the prevailing wisdom is usually that you should bed in old with new... whether its old rotors with new pads or vice/versa. You still need to follow the same bed-in procedures to transfer material from the new pads onto the old rotors, but those stoptech rotors should take whatever you throw at them.

I'm running the exact same set up. Nismo R tune pads and Stoptech sloted rotors. I've gotten 3 track days on them and have 50% front and 40% rear left. I expected them to last longer as well for the price. I'm planning to use them on the street/autocross for a little longer but will use my stock rotors with race pads for track days as soon as I figure out which pads to go with.
