safety for street and track
I have been looking, reading, and searching posts about roll bars and harness bars. I am just stuck on which to get. the roll bar is safer on the track, but then people are against it on the street since your not wearing a helmet. the harness bar wouldn't have that problem but then if you wrecked it would probably make things worse. so what would be the solution for an avid autocrosser and soon to be track junkie, who daily drives his car?
a rollbar is usually behind your head, so no issue on the street...usually - you might still be able to hit your head on it.
a full rollcage is probably a bad idea on the street....then again it's not illegal to wear a helmet in a car on the street that I know of
a harness bar by itself is only possibly risky if you obviously flip the car

at the risk of sounding stupid, why? I have a vague idea but I would rather hear it from someone who knew what they were talking about. also, could I change the seats without getting in trouble?
Not stupid at all.
When airbag deploy, they rip through the interrior garnish. Where exactly? I'm not sure. But I wouldn't risk a gun powder inflated (or helium in the case of the curtain) air bag being deflected on a bar of steel.
Putting the upper bars away from the curtains would move it closer to my head.

Last week, I had a disturbing thought/vision about the curtain airbag going off while I'm on the track wearing my harnesses. The harness do not allow my body to move laterally, so my neck breaks.
So, I've been trying to find out how far these curtains expand and protrude into the cabin. I know T-Bone accidents aren't common on the track, so it's not of dire importance, but knowing that the curtain air bag only expands and protrudes 3" from the glass would help me sleep better at night.
Roll cages aren't very safe for street use, IMO. The idea of having a metal bar, or even a padded metal bar just inches from my head feels creepy. I'd be inclined to start trailering the car if I get so far as to install a full roll cage.
Ever sit in the rear of an extended cab pickup where the seat has no backrest? If you tilt you head back just 2", it hits the glass. Now imagine getting rear-ended while sitting back there...that's creepy.

yeah i've come to the same conclusion, that it's an all or nothing affair
HANS device, 5 pt harness, aftermarket steering wheel with no airbag, rollcage, and helmet
or
seat belts
a racing seat will surely help lateral movements though, and that can be used on and off the track

so are you against changing the seats for 6 airbag cars? I was also wondering why it is the law that you can't take out airbags from the car, like the two curtain and the two in the seat. but they make some, of the same car, without those? shouldnt they make all 350z with 6.
I'm not against anything.
It's just a simple realization that the car is safer with all airbags and that these airbags where developped to work together.
If I ever cage my Z, all airbags will be taken off line.

I haven't looked into whether you can do this with the side airbags (my car doesn't have them), but I had switches installed on both driver and passenger front airbags for when I track the car. I have a rollbar and 6-point harnesses, too.
No HANS yet, and I still have the stock seat.
