An AutoX gone bad....
why would they set up the auto-x course so that it finishes by the pits or a fast straight then a turn which is by the pits? thats pretty much an accident waiting to happen
crazy accident though. and the worse thing is, it wasnt the owner who was drivin it! yikes
poor cars
at least noone got hurt

Ok, how can you not know that the brakes aren't on? I've read a couple of reports on this and they all said that the guy driving coasted 100+ feet before any of this started. No brakes were applied, nobody saw any brake lights go on. In the event he thought the brake pedal wasn't working why didn't he grab the e-brake? This is just very unfortunate.

Regardless thats one crazy, freak accident.

Yeah, if he yanked on it. If he just applied a small amount of pressure and reduced his speed by 1/2 the outcome may have been better. Its all speculation anyway.
That GT3 Porsche won the Super Stock class at the San Diego NT this year. The owner was letting a friend drive it. From what I understand the course was plenty safe with almost 100' from the finish to the spectator area (where the wrecked cars were parked).
The thread on VWvortex is starting to get a little heated. The safety steward for the event is actually the owner of the Celica that was hit. He has posted denying responsibility. Without being there I don't know how anybody can make assumptions on the course design.
If the pictures can be believed, and the driver at the time is the one stated, he is normally a very good (read: outstanding) driver.
Glad to hear that nobody was hurt, parts can be replaced!

You hear it on the news from time to time that an accident was the cause of someone not being about to find the brake or getting confusing the throttle for the brake. But for an able bodied and experienced autocrosser?
Even if he was left foot braking, how would it be possible to confuse the brake w/ the clutch? And even so, wouldn't the initial press of the clutch inform the driver that it was not the break and therefore he should have resorted to moving to the brake?
