Default What SCCA category would these mods put a Z?

My buddy doesn't have an account here and so I'm posting this for him:

Full bodykit : front/rear/skirts/wing
Tein Coilover suspension
HKS Hi-Power Dual Exhaust or Greddy evoTT (duno which he has)
Stoptech BBK
ATS carbon LSD
stock gears for now
Stillen SC stage 3 (max on 300hp 06 6mt Zs unless stg 4 comes out)
HKS twin Power ignition box: will improve the sparks power and timing which gives an even better response at low rpm and improves hp at high rpm
stillen cf hood painted
Stillen aftermarket strut bar
K&N drop in filter
cf jdm mirrors
Recaro seats + harness

SM2 is a hard class, and even harder this year since many of the other classes have now rolled into it.

SM/SM2 is basically do-anything class. You could see a stripped-down CRX with a supercharged K20 in it and its perfectly legit.

The tough SM/SM2's to me are the FI'd Miata's that are NA normally. They are usually very, very quick.

I would just go out and enjoy the event.

It's very hard to be competative in a specific class unless you have a competative car to start with, and mod specifically for the class you are going to be racing in. If it's just for fun, that car sounds like it would be great fun to drive on an autox course. Good luck to your friend.

Would you recommend that he also get a roll cage? Also he's happy with his stillen for autocross purposes but is that the ideal s/c for autox? Should have have gone vortech for higher end power, or single or even twin turbo? what do you guys think?

In my opinion for AutoX you want power in a broader range and lower in the RPM's, and quicker throttle response. This allows for greater flexibility and less shifting. On a Road course you can have higher, yet peakier power. As far as a Roll bar or full cage , it is not necissary for autox, but if you are thinking about a TT or Solo in the near future I would recommend it.

Insightful, thank you. In other words, for autox a supercharger like stillen would be best, where you have more power in the lower range. Maybe I'll go stillen also for autox as I will be going to every scca autox event for a while ;x

Are you & your friend a novice to autocross? If you are, I think you need to start with your stock setup first and learn how your NA car handles first. In addition, you'll also learn about yourself as a driver. Diving in head first into autocross without any previous experience and with all those modifications is not the ideal way to learn the sport. Basically, what I'm advising is get a good baseline of your car and yourself and mod from there, and one at a time. Experience how each mod is affecting you & the car, and adjust from there. In essense, fine tuning you & your car with each experience.

Though I have not autoxed for a few years, did drive in the stock class when I had an e46. I have yet to track my Z n/a as she only has 6000 miles.

He's autoxed for a few yrs and is trying to go for his scca instructor's license actually

That's good to hear. At least the drivers are already "modded."

I still recommend you & your friend auto-x your current cars in stock form and find out how they handle. Heck, I took my Z to a road course when she had ~3K miles, and she handled well. At least you'll know how your Z is adjusting from its stock version to the modified version that you're considering.

Oh, yeah for sure. I have coilovers in my car already though. I also have a bodykit with sideskirts...and if i remember correctly, those mess things up?

The Z in N/A form has a gerat powerband for autox. Where our cars gain the most time on other similar cars is out of corners. Make sure that his LSD is a good one, so he can put that power to work. Then suspension.

When thinking of autox, you should use this:

1. Tires
2. Suspension
3. Weight
4. Power
