Default AUTOX ONLY TIRE? Help please?

Hi,

okay I have read through numerous threads and still no clear or sorta clear answer...

I'm looking for an R-Compount AutoX tire STRICTLY for autoX events.

I trailer the tires and switch wheels and tires at events so these tires will be for AutoX only. Ive also read where some dont warm up for short autox events...OR are not sticky when cold to be competitive for AutoX....

I'm looking for an AutoX only Competitive tire that will last for autox events.

located in DFW, TX.
Wheels the tires will go on MB Motoring Weapon 17X9
looking for 275/40/17 all 4 corners

Also, where to buy in DFW....

Don@tireoption..i pm'd u...

IMHO, get 275/40-17 Kumho 710s from Tirerack.com. They should fit pretty easy on a 9" rim. I prefer the Kumhos cool and think they stick pretty good on the 1st run.

I'd be sorely tempted by the 295/40-17 however my 285/30-18s barely fit up front it could be a real expensive experiment.

You clearly have NOT searched.

There are two options to be competative.

Hoosier A6
Kuhmo V710.

I run 275 on my 7.5" front rims. You should get at least 285.
Do search next time.

The C50 compound is a medium track compound and is generally considered too hard to be competitive with the Kumho 710 and Hoosier A6. Its fine for autocross use but you would be quicker on the tires mentioned above.

Also, there's no such thing as a "best" autocross or track tire. You have to do the research and testing yourself to determine what works for you, your driving style, the event surface conditions, and your car.

+1...I ran their C70 compound last year (the softest rubber) and IMO it performed very well for autoX.

I'm now running Hoosier A6's, and while tire sizes are different, the general "feel" is the same. (obviously it's not 100% the same, but I can easily tell the difference when I'm on my older Toyo RA-1's compared to either the Hankook C70 or Hoosier A6...but the differences between the Hankook and Hoosier are too minimal for me to tell the difference - it's also been more than 6 months between running the hankook's, so I may be just getting older )

if you're limited to the 17X9's, IMO run the widest tire you can fit on them.

to spell our the choices again:

Hoosier A6
Pros: well known, is probably the easiest to mount (if you're pushing the limits on how wide of a tire you can fit, the Hoosier seems the best choice...), can be flipped on the rim to extend life.
Cons: some sizes cost more compared to the other 2, usually wears faster than the Kuhmos/Hankooks

Kuhmo V710
Pros: well known, good wear, usually some rubber left once the tires is "dead" (I like this...allows for practice rubber)
Cons: not as "mountable" as the Hoosier's for certain sizes (18").

Hankook C70
Pros: cost (still not as tested as the above 2), performs well, rubber left over once the tire is dead, can be flipped on rim.
Cons: not as well known or wide spread as the above 2...so it's hard to know really how it compares.

**this is just my impression...I'm fairly limited to driving exposure on the tires, so the above comments are from a mix of what I've felt while driving on them and what I've picked up from talking w/ others.
-I had the Hankook's for the full 2007 season
-I currently run Hoosier A6's (only 1 event on them so far)
-I ran on Kuhmo's at Nationals last yr on PDX-Racer's Z.

There are no 285-17 R compound tires.

Z.
I have no idea what tire you are talking about, but the Kumho V710 can be flipped.

Only the 18" Kumhos have mounting issues, short sidewalls, the 275-40-17 will go on a 7.5 so it should fall on a 9. Unless you need more top end gear stay away from the 295-17 Kumho, it is tall. This is the one place imho that Hoosier as the advantage on Kumho, they have some unique sizes that Kumho has missed the boat on.

I don't think you can find a better value when it comes to tire life, and competitiveness, than the V710.

Perhaps you don't understand what a 'recommendation' is Jason. I stated he could use at least a 285. That does not define a 285, but it does say that 275 is not enough tire. I also clearly referenced the width of the rim, not the height.

thanks for visiting,

FWIW, my experience with Hankook Z-214/C71 tires this weekend has surprised me. The turn-in and grip on a really crappy surface were great. This was with a 245/35-18 instead of my usual 285/30-18 Kumhos.

I'm hesitant to jump to them full time since we only have 12 runs but at around a 100 seconds per run that was a long time. The course was over a mile long and had a lot of inputs. I was gasping for air at the end and glad I quit smoking last year.

The Hankooks got hot later than the Kumhos and responded to drenching with water much quicker. Then they/I got faster.

Don't go and get all sensitive. I am sure you were embarrassed, trying to give someone the search beat down and you recommend a size they don't make.

Oh but sure, I guess the "not the height" covers it, not like he actually stated he was looking for a tire to fit his 17X9 inch wheel... Oh wait he did.

Just suck it up, you tried to clown him for not doing a search rather than being constructive, and now you look just as silly.

JasonZ, let us know how your search/tests turn out. I am getting ready to make the jump to r-compounds myself. I'm even more tempted to get 17" wheels just to make it cheaper.

I got a good deal on some MB weapon wheels in 17x9 +17 and +27.....they are way lighter than my stockers plus wider...so choosing them for my autoX needs was easy...

from what i have found....they seam to be pretty popular for those that track their Z's.....they have good offset and the 9 inch width and light weight..

thanks for the info...I'll correct my previous post (wonder why some of the ppl I know think the Kuhmo's aren't able to be flipped... )

*I went w/ Hoosier's this yr b/c I was looking for specific sizes that Kuhmo didn't have...

If you want to run in stock class (and you haven't modified your car out of that class), you must stay on the same size wheels that were stock on your model -- so if you have a Performance or Track (or MT Touring?), you're "stuck" with 18" wheels.

This post is a bit harsh isn't it? You are a lot nicer in person.

If you say so Jason. You should know as well as anyone if you have to ask what brand of R compound to use in autox, then you haven't searched. Period.
My arguments are concise and correct. Yours are only inflammatory.....

I can't wait to meet your fat @ss in person. I bet you wouldn't be so smug and cocky.

Ask anyone that knows me, I have always been smug and cocky. I especially get a kick out of guys that like to beat up on people for not doing a "through search", it is especially funny when the guy talking trash screws up his post.

I said exactly what I meant. If your simple mind couldn't find my message, then just don't post next time.

It's funny to me that someone so smug and cocky is stuck behind a computer. In person, ugly fat people are usually not cocky.

Again, thanks for stopping by,
