So, what is the best diff for a car that is driven on the street a little bit and tracked HARD once a month....with the emphasis on the track performance over street?

I suppose that depends on what your idea of "streetable" is. Mine's a bit skewed - only reason I "only" track the Z is the cost of rebuilding shocks / insurance etc... but it's a full on track car

To be perfectly honest with you, a well kept, 2004 track model is what I would get. They have what you want, are prefect for what you want to do and have a slightly higher set of tranny gears for a bit better acceleration. You'll save a bit of money, too.

I spoke with the father/son dynamic duo of Hines Motorsport a week ago (great bunch of guys with a ton of tires and Enkei wheels for sale I believe). It was recommended to me to use the OEM Nismo diff as they mentioned it was adjustable. I forgot what they use in their race car - it was one of their sponsors.

I think the VLSD is ok. It's by far better than nothing.

Fooshe - I'd argue that an '06 Track model is the one to get (it's what I bought in February of this year). It has the perkier Rev-Up which does make a nice difference (although the HR is even nicer, but I didn't want to pay the premium for the HR). An 06 should still be under warranty. The track has the Brembos, the VLSD and most importantly, CLOTH interior!

I might do a Nismo LSD swap right before my spring 09 events kick off.

I didn't think that any Nismo LSD was OEM.....
Unless of course the Nismo Z got the S-tune(or R-tune or watever) part stock?
