Default Transponder Mounting Point

Hey Guys,

Curious where the best place to mount the timing transponder is on the Z?

I was thinking of strapping it to the front grill.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

My instructor at an event a month ago mounted it to where the rear wiper goes in lieu of the wiper blade.

The front grill and right behind the front bumper.

You just need to have a fairly unobtrusive path to the ground that's no more than 24" from the ground itself.

If it's for competition you want it as far forward as possible.

Are you talking about an AMB transponder? Or an infrared trip-light type timing device?

If AMB... it should work find strapped to the front grill. We did that with a BMW last weekend that even had an aluminum splitter on it and the timing loops picked it up just fine.

I wouldn't mount one permanently there of course... better to find a way to mount it to the radiator support or something, preferably with line-of-sight to the ground, but like I said above, not absolutely necessary.

If it's wheel-to-wheel competition yes, not necessary for time trials though ... besides... what if you want to do a limo turn for style points as you're crossing the start/finish line huh?!

Pueblo Motorsports Park: I turn 1:50 or so for my laps. Some of the really fast cars turn 1:40 or high 1:30's I think the official lap record is in the 1:20's. However, the actual fastest recorded time was less than 2 seconds. Guy went wide on turn 10 (last turn before the front straight and timing device) Got two wheels off the outside. Tried to correct, lost it and begun to spin. Transponder(with car attached) crossed the line, car was spinning, transponder crossed the line again, and then crossed it the final time. Guy set the lap record at less than 2 seconds...

Of course, he also ended up spinning into the outside wall and wrecking his car.

On a serious note, for time trials (or HPDE), it doesn't matter if the transponder is in the front or the rear. Wheel to wheel, obviously, it needs to be in the front. What some of us do (for TT) is mount it to our trailer hitch reciever. Assuming you have a trailer hitch, that is... I use my hitch to tow my tire trailer, which is what a number of HPDE's/Time Trialers do.

I mount my transponder to a zip line under the car. Its at the back of the car when I start a hot lap and then gets zipped to the front of the car before I finish the hot lap. I'm working on a 5' telescopic extension to the zip line...

Hahahahahahha, sure you do John. When you get that worked out let us know and where we can get the parts do do it. Sounds like just the thing to have for qualifying. We mount our on the right side wheel well about12 to 14" above the ground on the flat body paney behind the wheel. We have ours hard wired but then we dont drive this car on the street.

John I have one set of very good tires if you want them.

i always tie it to my tow hook, no obstructions in any direction to disturb the signal.

here's a link to a pic:http://caliphotography.exposuremanag...049/cp2_060215

site doesnt allow pic linking

One thing to keep in mind with grill mounting: the transponders typically cost $350 to $450. If you have it mounted on your tow hook or in the front of your grill and tap someone or it gets hit with a rock, you're out some money.

The transponder would be the LEAST of my concerns if I bash in the front of my car!
