Default Hans Question

Hans is suppose to release a new option for their restraint system. It is a quick disconnect. It is suppose to be ready in mid-January (emphasis on suppose).

Did anyone see it at the PRI show this week? I am wondering if it is worth waiting for. If I wait until it is released, I will most likely not have it for my first event in 09.

Two people I know that wear Hans devices say they don't think it is necessary as long as you have the sliding tether.

One of the vendors I have talked to says the new anchors that go along with the quick disconnect will add 8 oz to the helmet.

Any thoughts?

I have this type of "quick release" straps on my HANS....push down to remove

http://hansdevice.com/shop_online/HA...nd-Accessories

But I must say, these tethers are not all that easy to use when you have the helmet on in the car...but you can install/de-install these...just a little hard with gloves on.

how is the new one different?

BTW: Call the HANS folks, I believe Howard is the guy to talk with. They are VERY helpful! Or call Ron @ DiscoveryParts.com, he has a "NASA Sparkle Pony" discount on till the end of the year. Ron is VERY knowledgable of the HANS and is close the HANS guys in Atlanta

see below:

We look forward to another record year and we at Discoveryparts.com are implementing a "Sparkle Pony Economic Stimulus Plan" untill Christmas to help the US economy.

Any NASA member who mentions "NASA Sparkle Pony Part Duex" on the phone or in the comment field of an online order will receive an additional 10% off their order. This is in addition to our free shipping policy also.

We can't do much for your 401K or RIMM stock, but we are trying to keep down the cost of racing for all of our friends. Thanks for the great year and see you next weekend!

I think what you have and what you sent the link to is a quick disconnect for the fixed tether system. I belive the new quick discomment will work with a sliding tether.

I talked to someone at Discovery (not Ron). His advice was to purcahse the sliding tether without the quick disconnect. He did not think it will add much on the sliding tether system and was not worth adding 8 oz of weight to the helment.

I will give both Ron and Howard a call.

Thanks

My concern with the above design is that you're introducing more potential areas of failure. My opinion doesn't mean much since I've never worn one, but I'd rather sacrifice a little convenience that have more small metal parts that might be a new "weakest" link in the chain.

I'm sure HANS has done plenty of testing though

I've run the older style fixed tether for a while and its a pain. I plan on upgrading to the sliding tether with quick release if that combination can go together.

An open cockpit car or a door slammer makes getting in and out with the HANS device somewhat easy. In a car where you have to climb out a window, the quick release would be a Godsend.

I'm a little ignorant... what is exactly "quick released"? The helmet from the device?

i have the design that Laze1 showed us a picture of. to me its MUCH easier to use the slider tether design then the pull quick release as in the picture. just push inward and the tethers slide in and out. just my .02. but then again, i have a "climb out the window" car. having both would be nice in an emergency situation, i guess.... hoping to never have to know. but if needed i can pull the orange straps and it releases from the helmet. or as i typically use, just slide the tethers forward.
