I currently run the 265/35/18 / 285/30/18 RE050 A pole positions on my car. LOVE EM....but they are $$$$$.....
I am burning through a set every 5k or so..and need something cheaper. I thought i would go to a 275/35/18 set up of kuhmo exsta MX tires but they are $ 225 per tire and if i go to a 275/40/18 I will get them for $ 159 per tire.
I just want to know if you can come up with any reasons why this setup would be a bad idea for me...??????????
Also please consider i once tried a set of toyo t1-R's and they made me want to cry. I returned them because the lack of sidewall stiffness made the car feel unstable and "waggy"

Where did you find the 275/35/18 XS's for $225? They were $250 from TireRack not even a couple months ago.
On topic, you'll probably get a lot of posts saying to go with a better coilover and different A-arms since there are higher quality available for the money. I'm not going to get involved in that debate this time. Other than that, I would leave the swaybars stock at first and see how it handles, then add them later if you still feel you need them.

I have a set of new Kumho XS's on the back of my Z now, and they have decent sidewalls and great grip.
I had the MX's before the XS's and I think the sidewalls on the XS's are much stiffer than the MX's. I went from a 225 to a 275, so I can't comment on grip. Obviously with 2 inches more tread width the grip was increased. For an extra $25 just get the XS's.
the mx is said to be superior to the xs one is extream performance one one ultra high performance.
and these coilovers are awsome i have driven back to back on jic's and the stance felt better, for the price i got them i love them...the arms work well for me as well. I know there is better....

the MX is more expensive is a 220 treadwear not a 4xx treadwear. I am not claiming to be right but i would bet money they did not make the sidewall softer on the extream performance tire so that they could save it for a glorified all season.

The Ecsta MX is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.
The Ecsta MX molds Kumho's advanced silica tread rubber compound into a directional tread pattern that features massive, stable blocks to increase cornering traction and steering response, while four large, circumferential and multiple directionally aligned lateral grooves resist hydroplaning and enhance wet traction. The tire's structure includes two wide steel belts that are reinforced by spirally wound nylon to provide excellent strength, uniform ride quality, and high-speed capability while the sidewalls are tuned to resist lateral deflection and to provide handling control and positive feedback.

MX hasn't been revised, the XS exist's because the MX has been surpassed by a longer and longer list of other tire makes and models. Tirerack hasn't tested the XS, I find it very hard to swallow any suggestion that the MX will test better when the XS is finally fully tested by them.
I have used the MX on my car, along with GSD-3, KD, RT-615, HTRIII, and the RE-01R. I would rate the MX very simular to the HTRIII, though the MX grip levels drops below the HRTIII in the winter even though winters are pretty mild where I'm at in California. I like the the RE-01R the most, but can find the sizes I need the most in the RT-615, price isn't too bad either.

Grip, you're misinformed man. The XS are basically the replacement for the MX, I don't know what you're reading (read: smoking).

I have been autocrossing for a little over three years now. I go through at least two sets of tires per year. These new XS's are better than the MX's for sure.

ok how about them price tho....how can you beat 159 per tire on a 275/40/18 I mean i cant go to a Re01R because they dont make one wide enough for a 9.5 inch wheel.....and 275 is the perfect size.
The XS is the MX's replacement tire. 220 treadwear on MX, 180 on XS. I love my XS's so far.
Funny that the RE-01R doesn't come in a 275 though. Stops at 265. Close enough I guess.
