Default Where do you mount your racing harness?

Just got a crow 6pt harness with cam lock 3" wide and gonna be running a recaro spg seat, was thinking about getting a harness bar or just finding a spot to bolt it onto the car. Wanted to see what people were doing and looking for recommendations. If you guys recommend a harness bar which brand do you guys recommend? thanks

this is a great place to look for a harness bar. All of them are basically the same thing.

Please, Please, Please either get a cage or a harness bar. I like the BCR bar. Easy to install and very capable. However, make sure you install the harnesses correctly. If you don't they are worthless. In fact, I would venture to say that mounted incorrectly, they are more dangerous than if you only ran stock belts.

Agreed.

If you look at the SCCA GCR instruction book they have a whole section on harness mounting and routing. I would highly suggest taking a quick read and them mount the harnesses to meet thier requirements. Also, shop around very carefully for a "Harness bar". Most do not meet FIA, SFA, or GRC requirements. There are a few that do though.

Interesting, I actually called NRG and they told me none of their harness bars work for the 350z but evasive lists it for the 350z....

Ive been leaning towards getting a harness bar, the only brands ive heard of so far for the z are sparco, bcr, and avalon. Not using it for race, just weekend track car, but yes saftey is an issue, thanks for the info so far guys.

Even though this will be for HPDE and open track days...there are several organizations, including us, that use the GRC as a reference point.

The NRG works in the Z but the support rods were poorly designed and don't fit properly - so most people run w/o them - which is not good. I would go w/ BCR.

one of my instructors i had at an hpde a while back had a Z and she
had a harness set up that did not use a cage or harness bar-it was
somehow fastened behind/under the seat-i did not take time to look
at how it was mounted but it seemed to work pretty good-we did a
session in her car so i could watch her lines and i liked it.

The main issue with the shoulder harnesses is if the angle is to great is will cause spine compression on a significant impact. If you look at section 9.3.18 of the GCR there is a great illustration of a good set up with the proper angles for all the harnesses and the reason for each angle. basically you really want the shoulder harnesses at 90 degrees of the spine. You can play with +/- 10 degrees. One of the reasons so many harness bars will not do is they will either flex, bend, or come dismounted under the 2000 lbs of force in a impact.

The lap harnesses should remain across the pelvic line, but tha's pretty easy to do if you use the stock belt locations for the harness mounts. The anti-sub straps should be close enough to your crotch to prevent any movement under the steering whell and dash. I recomend 6 point harnesses because to will distribute the load on the all important crotch area.

"Working pretty good" won't cut it when it REALLY needs to do its job in an accident. And as was mentioned above, if it's not installed properly, it can turn a bad accident into a tragic one.

Look, everyone here has the same basic advise...don't put harnesses in just to say you have the, look cool or think you're more safe with them when you may not be. Installed correctly, a 5 or 6 point harness is better protection. However a incorrectly installed or worn belt set can do more damage than good. I have seen it first hand and it is not just a fluke. Install the belts as they are recommended, please. If not, just use the stock belt. By the way, the belts you described in the Z your instructor had don't even sound close to being correctly installed.

I've got 6-point harnesses mounted on a rare Avalon Racing harness bar, probably the best harness bar made for the 350Z. It is mounted directly on the stock seat belt mounting points on the B-pillars. One great benefit of this design is that it really stiffens the upper portion of the Z, hardly any flex at all.
