Default How bad are stock pads on track?

Hey guys, I received the wrong front cobalt XR2 brake pads and I have a track event this Saturday I might not be able to reschedule. How bad are the stock brake pads? If they are going to wear down to the backing plates during one track day, I might as well overnight a pair of XR3.

Car is 2008 Base on Khumo XS (street tires)

Thanks

Stock pad are actually not that bad. They dont wear as quick and they do not require a lot of heat to have a good bite. They also, will not wear as fast when heated to high temps. They may actually out last your HP pads. The only down fall is brake dust.

You should actually get more laps then you HP pads. Your HP pads will have more bite, but you have to heat them up, to get full bite, once that is done they wear quicker.

True, but that is far from a stock car.

I have the stock brembos and basicly a stock car; even on a lap day event they fade pretty bad on the 6th or so lap on a tight course (ie. Mosport ddt).

What fluid are you using?

ok, you cannot compare jetpilots car to yours but i can, i only have the
normal bolt-ons and i ran the nismo pads recently and wore them out in
1/2 the day. when i went to my first track event i boiled the stock fluid
before lunch and the pads were fading out after about 7-8 laps and i was
just an average driver then. now i run hawk dtc pads with 2 piece rotors
high temp fluid, ss brake lines etc.. 150 lb weight reduction and lightweight wheels and sticky tires and i still killed the brakes. melted my center caps last event and pads were smoking after about 9 laps on my
4th session of the day.(these pads are rated to like 1400 degrees!)

Wow, not good.

Out of curiosity, what have you done for weight reduction?

Chris... You are so brutal on brakes it's not funny. You are an excellent driver and cetainly have capabilities higher than most drivers. I don't think you realize how hard you drive that car at the track.

Laze1's Helpful Hint #723:

You should always perform a full brakes system check prior to a Track event (obviously) . But you should also check it AT THE TRACK! During the event! On a regular basis!

You can do this two ways:
#1. The first is the easiest: monitor the level of the brake fluid in the master cylinder after EVERY SESSION. If you can actually see the fluid level being lower than when you started the event, you have used up some pad material. The questions is: how much wear? If this is the case, you should perform step 2 immediately and before going back on track.

#2. Pull the at least one front wheel and remove the pads for inspection.
Note: If you are past "half-way" on pad wear, you should consider changing pads if you have significant track time remaining for that day, or a second day of track time. However, each track/car/driver/pad will yield different results...but after half-way, the brakes will begin to fade more quickly,,,and the potential failure (depending on the pads/car/driver/track) goes WAY UP!

Just free advice...that can save you Track Day Noobs MANY headaches!

stock pads on those tires should not pose any issues for a first time track outing

spend time learning the lines of the track and overall technique - fast lap times come naturally after that

Couldnt agree more. You would be shocked at how quickly some pads will wear down, especially at brake intensive tracks. In Jose's car, I nearly killed a set of pads at CMP in about 60-70 total minutes of track time. Granted, they were DS3000's but they definately took us both by surprise.
