Default DIY Magnetic numbers?

For those who cut their own numbers/class out of the magnetic stuff.

1) What material did you use? (magnetic vinyl? I saw some DIY that said to get the magnetic vent covers from Lowes)
2) Where did you get it from? (I'm hoping to find something at Home Depot or

I don't feel like spending $80 to get them pre-made when I can probably do it myself for like 10 bucks.

Thanks!

well, talking ONLY magnetic material.........i have found that its usually about 1mm thick....

and about half of it is magnetic material, the rest is the vynil or whatever its made from....

you need to source some that has more magnetic material cause with the crease in the 350z door, they will slide down.....unless you make the numbers big....

go to an event and look at a buddies magnets or others that made their own and you can see when you pull the number off, look at the composition of the material and you will see that the good ones are more magnet then vynil....when it comes to the thickness and percentage of that thickness being more magnet...

You can also buy it from your local sign supply warehouse. 3.00 sq ft. Or 100.00 and change for a full roll.

Didn't see this thread, but I got my numbers and class from rally decals a few years ago. Great product and it's one giant number so its easy to apply and has a lot of surface material to stick to. Pretty cheap and you don't have to do the work yourself lol

Go to your local home improvement store (Lowes, Home Depot, whatever) and get yourself a package of Magnetic Register Covers (they go over the vents in your house). They're thin enough they can be cut with scissors easily enough and are large enough to be legal for SCCA rules. This method worked really well for me for the two years I did AutoX. I lost some of them on track earlier this year, but I think that had more to do with age. So I made some new ones for my second event and ran some blue tape strategically and it worked out quite well.

For mine I purchased some bulk magnetic strip from ebay and cut mine using an xacto knife. Came out pretty decent.

I paid $32 shipped to my door for six #s. It was well worth it, I was getting sick and tired of putting them up with blue tapes and removing them afterwards. So far driven with them, they haven't fall off yet *knock on wood*.

This is what I plan on doing mainly because it'll be my first year doing autox in the current Z. If all goes well, I'll buy the 'professional' numbers.
