i've used about 5-6 sets of Falken Azenis RT-615s.

great tires for novice drivers and drivers on a budget but i think i've outgrown these street tires. looking at the Toyo R888 next.

 

I agree, I think the RT615's are the best performance bargain out there.

For track use though I use Toyo RA1s and Hoosier R6.

I use the 615's for HPDE and spiritied driving

 

I like the RT-615's in 275/40/17 all around. Plus they let me drive to and from the track without toting along a 2nd set of wheels.

 

I'm also keeping an eye on this thread. I have the Rays that come with the 06 track model, 18" in front and 19" in rear. I'll likely keep them as my street wheels even though they are curbed pretty bad. I'm looking at light and cheap 18" for track wheels to clear the OEM Brembos (do 17s?) and I'll be switching from the stock staggered to even-width front and rear.

I've got Kosei K-1 TS 17x9 lightweight racing rims (16 lbs) and they clear my Brembos. I have Hankook Z211 275/40 tires mounted all around. Here are a couple of pics of my setup during this weekend's autocross on a road course . . . the course was over a mile long!

 

Front shot -- just for grins. I just need more camber so I can catch up with these supercharged & turbo'd S2Ks & Miatas . . .

 

z-u-later what offset are you running? I just talked to tirerack the the guy pretty much flipped when I told him I was considering +20 offset

 

The offsets on my rims are +35, so I'm using spacers to push them out flush with the fenders -- 15mm in front & 30mm in rear. No rubbing whatsoever (and I'm dropped ~2") but the rear fenders are rolled. With the spacers, my offsets are essentially +20 in front and +5 in rear.

 

Ed, those wheels look familar to something I had on my old car which I bought for track and street. :P

Those rims are definitely light. I lost the center cap on one after MSR track event though.

I really need to get a setup for autox/track....badly

 

Keep us posted with the results. That's pretty much the same setup I'm considering (except maybe R888's instead). I'm curious about clearance and whether 275/35 would be better than 275/40...

True, but they also give a range of usable wheels sizes for a given tire. He is going to run an 18x10+22, and here is the list of acceptable tires, per Hoosier's site, for that width in either the A6 or R6:


P255/40/18 8.5-10" (rec'd wheel diameter) 9.0" (meas'd wheel diameter)
P275/35/18 9-11" (rec'd wheel diameter) 9.5" (meas'd wheel diameter)
P285/30/18 10-11" (rec'd wheel diameter) 10.0" (meas'd wheel diameter)
P295/30/18 9.5-11" (rec'd wheel diameter) 10.0" (meas'd wheel diameter)

 

Is there any drawback of running a tire size on a smaller width wheel? I"m still staying within the recommended wheel diameter, just the lower portion of it. You'll have a bit more tire sticking out, but would that be worse for hard cornering? Maybe sidewall will be less stiff and roll more?

Example: 255/40/18 on a 18x8.5 wheel

What would your #1 choice for a street tire be for track use?

 

How is the RE050A PP for tread wear with a UTQG of only 140? I had a set of the now discontinued S03 PPs, rated at 140 on my car and they only lasted 5,000 miles without even being driven hard.

 

I've really happy with the Sumitomo HTRZ3 as the street tire on my 350Z.

Yeah, they don't have the "name" that a lot of other tires have, but the "name" isn't worth double the price IMHO.

 

What size wheels/offsets are you running? And are you lowered?

Exactly. I have these tires right now and have used them at Buttonwillow once. They held up nicely for a street tire and only got greasy towards the end of the sessions in the latter half of the day when the weather was hotter.
