When a tire company lists the acceptable rim width for a particular tire size they are using a formula specified by the US DOT. This recommendation is not the ideal rim width nor is it the complete list of rim widths that work with the tire. Its a government safety formula for street driven cars. It comes with and is required for DOT tire approval.

Talking with Jeff at Hoosier and Rudy at Kumho over the years you learn that the ideal performance rim width for a road racing DOT tire is 1/2" wider then the actual unmounted tread width. For the Hankook Z211 285/30-18s I have, the actual tread width is 10.625" inches unmounted. The ideal performance rim width would be 11.125".

In most cases, packaging constriants or rules keep us from running the ideal rim width. That's normally not a big deal because DOT performance tire manufacturers know that and design their tires to work well with rim wdiths that are +/- 10 to 15% of the unmounted tire tread width.

^^ hence my running 265/35/18 Pilot Sport Cups on 18x9.5 (which ironically have a MUCH wider tread width than 275/40 street tires)

Has anyone used the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 (not the new Star Spec) on the track?

285/30-18s is the widest I've heard.

warning, hoosiers are like crack.....

They also let you get away with some really stupid stuff so don't let them make you start creating bad habbits.

I've been running on kdw2's all year so I think I've weeded out any bad habits (300 treadwear ftmfl)

Btw any tips to prolong wear?

do you have stock suspension? I'm looking to get the same setup... is there much difference between the 17x9 and 17x10 as far as looks? Do the two sizes flow well together? Pics?

The only ways to keep hoosiers from wearing

1) Don't over drive them.
2) only use them when needed. I keep a set of Falkens for practice and instruction laps.
3)Watch the inflation, especially when hot.

that's about it.

i forgot to mention in my pm i have stock suspension, my front tires seem
kinda short, they are 255/4017, i wish i could find some 255/45's or
maybe 265/35 for the fronts to even out my height from front to rear
right now my nose is about 1/2 inch lower than rear

I finally decided to take the plunge too!!!
I just ordered:
5zigen Fn01r-c Hot version Matt Black (new verson)
17x9 +35, 17x10 +25
Falken Fk452
265/40, 275/40

I think this setup was the best way to go (for me)... I think it might be a good blend of everyday driving and performance driving. I ordered the rims from Racinglab and the tires from edgeracing. I would have ordered it as a package at edgeracing, but the site says their fn01r-c's (old verson) were out of stock. So im gonna take the rims and tires to a local wheel shop to get them mounted and balanced. Do you guys recommend an alignment for when I get the wheels put on? Thanks to all who answered my questions, I really appreciate it. I will try to get some pics up asap...

I'm also looking at 17" setups that will clear the OEM Brembo brakes. Unstaggered as well so I can get max rotation out of them. I'll order them first with some street legal tires and once I cook through those I'll be going r-comps.
I prefer light (in terms of weight) gold wheels and something cheap.

Not a brand that get's a lot of attention but the Falken Hanabi's seem to be well made and their 17 X 9" rim only weighs 18 lbs. heck the 15 X 7 weighs in at 11.

Not sure if the offset will work though.

Has anybody tried the 18x9.5+12 all around? Or the 17x9.5 +12 in front and 17x10 +25 in back?
