Default Can somebody 'splain this to me...

A couple of nearby autocrossers recently posted about the purchase of a new autox car - a Hundai Genesis R-spec coupe. They got rid of a national trophy winning Mini Cooper-S for it.

I can't figure out why they are so excited over it, especially after hearing the specs - 210hp, 3200lbs, 19" wheels. From what I read, there's no aftermarket for Hundai parts yet.

They could have bought a 370Z which weighs the same with 330hp. Lots of aftermarket stuff available or coming soon.

What am I missing?

Ya, the after market may not be to big for the car but there is a turbo upgrade kit or w.e for 1,500$ that give you 300hp+ to the wheels. plus the track edition genisis coupe is 25 compared to 10 more

the engine is the same engine found on the lancer rallisport so there is alot of aftermarket support for the engine, and alot of aftermarket tuners have already made products for the car.

I don't know why either? But the weight of a 370Z is much heavier than the Genesis. The Z is closer to 3400 lbs w/out a driver.

While turbo ugrades would be great, I believe they are planning on running it in the stock class.

There is a lot of excitement about the car. It did VERY well with almost no prep in GS. The R Spec comes with quite a bit of Camber adjustment, weight under 3100 lbs, and can fit 295's. There are a lot of national teams switching to the Genesis coupe this year. It maybe the car to beat in GS.

You know how the reality never quite meets the hype though. Based on what I'm seeing here....

http://sccaforums.com/forums/thread/393068.aspx

.. the camber bolts allow up to about -2º, the weight is more like 3250lbs and 295s won't fit the front.

Intuitively, I just have a hard time imagining how a car physically larger then the 350Z, weights slightly less with a whole lot less HP is going to be that competitive. It will be interesting to see how it works out later this year.

They are a couple of smart racers. They've figured out what the next potential GS class winner is and have made the jump. Real racers will drive whatever car it takes to win a class, they have no marque loyalty.

The -2 was for the track version, the R is suppose to have a bit more. Comparising to a 350Z is comparing to a completely different class. The 350Z competes in CS. To see if a car is competitive you need to look at others in it's class. Considering the class is made up of V6 American muscle and FWD imports it looks to be very promising. The spoiler in the mix maybe the V6 Mustang with the optional Track package.

Just read about the 295's not fitting. Still leaves 275s.

plus the look sweet as hell.

I also wondered in the beginning, but then I saw one run at the Bridgestone National Street Tire Challenge and it ran pretty well.

Per this post... http://sccaforums.com/forums/permali...ad.aspx#393535 .. the R-spec has 0 to -2 but he's running it at -1.5.

Per this post... http://sccaforums.com/forums/permali...ad.aspx#393620 ... a track model get around -0.75.

I realize that the 350/370 are in a totally different class. I'm also looking at this relative to their previous car which was a MCS.

MCS to D Stock. Vacuum at the top in G Stock. A new car comes along that does fairly well with limited prep, is RWD, and has some factory support (camber bolts in the trunk).

Where did they say 295's wouldn't fit? I must have missed it...

But I think this is the car to have in GS...
