ARP studs are great and you can also get equal strength studs from Summit Racing in Ohio. I think they are the same as the Evo. Get fairly long ones so you can put on spacers if you want to move the tire out to the edge of the fenders.

The stock studs will eventually break. We torque ours to 80#'s.

I broke 3 on one rim during a standard wheel swap. Breaking a stud is probably one of the most nerveracking experiences if you have never changed one before, lol..

Consider replacing your front wheel bearings when you install the studs...if you have many track days/miles on the car...

Wow, after 5+ years of autocrossing and track days with regular changes between street wheels and my autocross and track wheels, I have never broken a stud or stripped one or had a problem with lug nuts.

How are you removing them and better yet, putting them on? Impact wrench?

You should be tightening them with a torque wrench, never with an impact wrench. Also, at least once a year you need to put some anti-seize compound on the studs.

Better studs may be a cure but it sure seems you've got to be doing something else wrong to be regularly breaking studs.

I've never had a problem either with the Z, or with my old RX7. However, hearing these other guys makes me nervous. How tight do you torque your lug nuts Dave when you swap?

I certainly agree that if you have a real race prepped car then it's worth the extra insurance of having ARP or similar studs. With a street car where you're constantly changing wheels, you are automatically presented with the opportunity to inspect the studs, plus if there is a problem, that's when you're likely to break one and find it.

If corz is only autocrossing, he's not subjecting the studs to the kind of stresses that tracking and racing does. Broken studs should be rare IMO.

I broke a ton of them on my old 350z, almost one a weekend. I ended up going with the NISMO studs on the front, never did put them on the rear. At that time though I changed from using a 4-way bar to just a socket, that severely cut down on the number of studs I broke. In fact I don't think I broke any of the rears after stopping using the 4-way bar.
