you should use a torque wrench for this.

In fact I don't think I broke any of the rears after stopping using the 4-way bar.

^^it surprises me that people don't use torque a wrench on their lug nuts, kinda scary if you ask me

How are you removing them and better yet, putting them on? Impact wrench?

You should be tightening them with a torque wrench, never with an impact wrench. Also, at least once a year you need to put some anti-seize compound on the studs.

Better studs may be a cure but it sure seems you've got to be doing something else wrong to be regularly breaking studs.
I agree.....

Ive done tons of wheel changes for autoX and mostly drift events.

I know friends of mine (aaronlosey) has gone through at times 80-100 tires in the rear alone and has never had an issue with wheel studs.

I think its more the process than it is the studs themselves it seams.

random stud failure sure, but that should be once a blue moon..

Actually I did, but I used the 4-way bar to spin them on/off quickly. Lesson learned, trust me.

Same here. I have Nismo studs and hardened lugs. Never had a problem. I also have different lugs for each set of wheels - DD, Track and AutoX. Perhaps that's the problem? No flex + wrong lugs = snapped studs.

Also, sounds like a lot of people may be overtightening, which can stress the stud and cause it to eventually fail. I can't believe people are not using torque wrenches? Even an impact preset at 80lbs. would over-tighten a lug with each cycle.

if anything i think it could be from lack of anti seize, been changing my wheels often for track as well, and noticed a bit of rust starting and also made installing/removing the lug nuts more difficult, added some anti seize, smooth as when i did my first wheel change.

Not saying this about anyone associated with this thread but you'd be surprised to know how many people still jump up and down on those 4-way bars to remove and install the wheels.

I think that ^^^ and wider wheels can put extra strain on the studs.

Spacers plus wider wheels put extra stress on the studs - sure. You are increasing the lever arm, and torque = force x distance of the lever arm. But is it too much? Our racing friends, who are forced to run large spacers to stay within spec, do it with longer studs without issue.

How many finger tighten the lug nuts then give the wheel a few shakes to make sure it's sitting flat on the rotor, centered on the hub and lug nuts?

How many of you guys hand tighten the nuts before using the wrench?

How many follow the star pattern when tightening? (i.e. 1,3,5,2,4)

I know, I've watched guys at the track hold the wheel up on the studs then start driving on lug nuts with an impact wrench. I guess they've been watching too many Nascar events.

With the amount of times I change wheels, I'm happy to say I do these things consistently.

Yea, I'm not shore y I've been brakeing them like that. Cuz I alway put the lugs on by hand and put them to 75 I do use r-comps but I don't think just auto-xing would do that...
