Default autocross tires?

I have an 06 350 and I'm about to get back into autocross, and I was looking for the most affordable d.o.t. race tire. The best deal I found was hankooks on tire rack for about $200 bucks each, 255/40 17 all around. What are you guys going with these days, any recommendations or perhaps experience with this tire? Thanks.

Most people are going to say the Dunlop Direzza Star Specs, but they are not cheap. You could use these in pretty much any class including stock classes.

Are you referring to the Hankook RS3s? I've heard they are pretty good too.

I'm assuming the Hankooks would be your track only set correct?

You're probably referring to the Hankook RS-3 right? I have no experience with them, but have heard good things. I bought the Direzza Star Specs last season and am very happy with them (square setup 245s X 18). I also heard Kumho Ecsta XS was another reasonable choice. If you're looking for a recommendation, I'd suggest the Direzzas. Good luck with your choice. Rick

These are what I'm refering to... http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....el=Ventus+Z214

And yes, they will be for "autocross only." It seems like the price of d.o.t. race tires have gone up quite a bit in the last few years. Last set I bought was like $150 a tire for bfg R1's unshaved.

rocketrich - AST is the all seasons version. You probably meant V710 or the XS.

Yes, the price for DOT-R tires has gone through the roof -- oil prices (both for making and transporting) and the fact that more and more people are competing for the limited number of tires.

Tire prices will go up even more with the mess in Libya and the Middle East. I just bought Star Specs and will be trying them out tomorrow. However, I don't have another UHP tire to compare them too. They are leaps and bounds better than the no-names the car came with when I bought it.

Well then you are really looking for a good street tire, not a "DOT Race" tire.

RS3
Star Spec
XS
