Default Pirelli backs artificial wet races

This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard

Ecclestone put forward his radical idea this week, suggesting that the suspense created by using sprinklers to wet a circuit mid-race would be a much better way of improving the show than having moveable rear wings.

"There are race tracks that you can make artificially wet and it would be easy to have such systems at a number of tracks," Ecclestone told the official F1 website.

"Why not let it 'rain' in the middle of a race? For 20 minutes or the last ten laps? Maybe with a two-minute warning ahead of it. Suspense would be guaranteed and it would be the same for all."

Ecclestone's idea may have divided opinions among fans, but tyre manufacturer Pirelli believes that such a move would be great for F1.

"I thought Bernie Ecclestone's comments were quite interesting," Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery told AUTOSPORT.

"Straight after our recent successful [wet-weather] Abu Dhabi test I saw him and said, 'why don't we do an artificial wet race?' The technology is such that you can wet a circuit with a sprinkler system, so the idea is not as daft as it sounds.

"Having seen what it was like in Abu Dhabi, certainly with a wet element it would look spectacular - and visibility shouldn't be a problem because there would be no clouds.

"From a tyre makers' point of view, there is no difficulty in making suitable tyres. We have seen great races in the past when you have had an extra variable like the weather, so why not?"

Although the introduction of artificial wet races could be viewed by some as too much of a gimmick for F1, Hembery believes that the sport should be looking at avenues where it can increase entertainment - and he thinks there are other gimmicks that have become accepted as the norm.

"At the end of the day you want people to watch what you are offering," he said. "F1 ultimately competes for entertainment space with other sports - so people need to see something that is interesting.

"From that point of view, an artificial wet race would add to the show - and you want something people will watch.

"A good example of a radical idea in the sport that have been accepted is the Singapore Grand Prix. You could argue that running at night under lights is a gimmick. But it has turned out to be one of the most spectacular races of the season. It is stunning.

"Couldn't you in fact argue that a street circuit itself is gimmicky? After all, you have created a circuit out of normal roads."

He added: "I would agree that something fake like throwing in safety cars frequently to close the field up if they got too spread out would be going too far, but in terms of throwing something of a new challenge, like an artificial wet race, at drivers, tacticians and engineers, it would be great."

Pirelli conducted several days of wet weather night running at Abu Dhabi earlier this year to simulate the kind of conditions they could encounter in the early-season Asian races.

The Italian tyre manufacturer soaked the circuit itself to simulate rainy conditions.

Night races are a good idea. Wet races? Really? How about we just randomly replace one driver on the circuit with a drivers ed student before the final 10 laps and see how many accidents we can cause. Are teams now going to be switching to rain tires just before the last few laps in anticipation of the deluge?? I don't see how this could cause more excitement. The final laps of a race are usually exciting enough to begin with...

That is going to be simcity 2000 and not anymore a F1 race....
what about the volcano popping out in the middle of the track??? and an alien attack??? riots invading the track? nuclear power plant blowing?

first they did everything that was in their power to make races safer than commuting on a highway, than they cut the ***** out of drivers penalizing even if they look at the other too aggressively... and now they complain because the races are boring...

NO $HIT SHERLOCK!!!!

F1 is always looking to better the sport look what is brought this year movable rear wings so over taking will be easier new tyre company with special formulated compounds, they even brought back the kers system. Now would artificial rain make it better not sure but think about the difficulty the teams will have changing pit stop strategies halfway throughout the race. I personally think it would make it intense. plus some of the upcoming drivers may get a break like lewis hamilton did his first year in the rain. But trithfully it rains at several events every year so i think they should leave it up to mother nature.

Well Pirelli had it's best wet weather racing data just yesterday. Probably the worst idea since the roundy round rednecks lined up the back markers on the inside & in the middle of the so called redneck racing.

Wise up Bernie, this is F1 not the local redneck county fair racing.

Heavy rain made today’s final 2011 F1 test day in Barcelona of little real value for the four teams that had elected to stay on.

For much of the day it was too wet for proper running – in other words in safety car territory – so until it finally eased off slightly, very little was learned.

Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari and Williams had all opted to miss a day earlier in the week and run today in order to give more time for new parts to come through. It was apparent some days ago that Saturday would be wet, and three of the teams did at least get some useful tire testing in.

Although times meant little, Nico Rosberg was fastest for Mercedes, ahead of Pastor Maldonado and Lewis Hamilton. Michael Schumacher ran a few laps in the Mercedes early on, but focused on race preparations such as pit stop practice, and didn’t do a proper time.

“It was tricky out there today,” said Rosberg. “There wasn't a lot of grip, but it was really useful to get the experience on the Pirelli wet tires. We have made a lot of progress over the four tests this winter and it's really nice to see that things are going in the right direction.

“We are on the up for sure, and all credit to the team for getting the upgrades on the car and, most importantly, to see that they are working as expected.”

Schumacher added: “It was good to complete a few laps out there this morning and try out the Pirelli wet tires. There was obviously a limit to what we could achieve, but we made good use of the time by working through our race procedures. It's been a good week here in Barcelona and we're certainly happy with our position going into the first race of the season.”

Hamilton insisted that McLaren has new parts coming for the first race that might improve the team’s form: “We tested a couple of things during some shorter runs, but it was very dangerous out there: very slippery and lots of aquaplaning,” said the 2008 champion. “This definitely isn’t normal Spanish weather! We learnt a bit about the Pirelli Intermediates and Extremes, but there was so much aquaplaning that it was a bit too risky to do longer runs.

“As for the world championship, I’m excited – we’ve got a long season ahead of us. We’ve got a lot of work to do, but we have more updates coming for Melbourne. The championship is open, and we don’t know what to expect. Our whole team will be pushing very, very hard.”

Fernando Alonso was seen briefly in the Ferrari, but like Schumacher, he did not complete a meaningful lap.

Pos Driver Constructor Time Laps
1 Nico Rosberg Mercedes GP 1m43.814 35
2 Pastor Maldonado Williams 1m44.333 23
3 Lewis Hamilton McLaren Mercedes 1m44.560 33
4 Michael Schumacher Mercedes GP - 5
5 Fernando Alonso Ferrari - 5
