It is amazing how so many safety features seem to be missing from racing of that era. However, do you realize that seat belts were not required to be in road cars until 1967? There were very few safety features on any cars at that time.
Wasnt just F1. All motorsports had lots of deaths. In 70's as a kid I attended a couple events where drivers died at regional level events. The entire sport has become much more safety focused. Just look at roll cage design now compered to 60's and 70's, onboard fire systems, seats, harnesses, helmet designs, fire suits, Hans devices, window safety nets, in car safety nets.
Also rules changes and race track safety improvements have made huge impacts to safety. Even Paddock safety has changed.
