It's entirely possible. But it depends how tight the track is.
A friend of mine tests an FRS here.

It runs the very tight Toronto Motorsports Park in 1:26.5 stock. He did a similar test later and put RS3s and KWV3s on the FRS I believe and did a 1:23.3 or something.
Dave works for numerous magazines including Modified mag. They had a track build project G35 Coupe that was well modified and it struggled to find 1:22.40.
It is common belief that a stock 350Z will do at best around 1:28 on this track.
(My pb is around 1:20.5 but my car is pretty stripped out)
Most newcomers in 350Zs do about 1:32- 1:33.

I drove a BRZ on race tires on our test-and-tune course. I know the course very well, (it has not changed in ~2 years) and also drove my Z on street tires the same day on the same course....
My modestly-prepped (No HP mods at all) BSP Z on street tires, was about .5 seconds faster than the BRZ on race tires. (29.5xx vs 30.1xx)
FWIW, I love the BRZ/FRS.

The FR-S is a great platform, one I have considered myself. It's also great bang-for-buck, and with a bit more HP and a capable driver, it can be a super fun and fast track car.
I played with a modified one at Laguna Seca this weekend. This was in the advanced group, so it's not like there was some n00b driving it. It was many seconds slower than my modified Z. Still not apples:apples, but it is real data. I'd say a capable driver in an FR-S compared to an "ok" driver in a 350Z is a very tight comparison on a "big" course.
Pro driver, Randy Pobst, takes a stock BRZ around Laguna for a best 1:51.3 lap time:

Evasive Supercharged FR-S with pro driver race tires did 1:59 at Buttonwillow. I have done 2:00.8 at the same track configuration with street tires Rs-3, fully tuned w/cam. I think the power of our Z is still have some advantage over Fr-S. But who knows, time will tell.

All depends on the track. SOW may be a different story (with equal tires and drivers)

He returned on r888 and gained almost 2 secs. The michilen primacy tires stock for both brz/frs are high mileage tires. Now im in an 08 nismo still on street tires and those danmed conti dws up front but only losing to the frs bye a few tenths ill let yall know how i do on r compounds.
