Default Narrow H2O Hoosiers better than...?

Autox noob. Yes, I know that it's generally advised that beginners spend some time on less grippy rubber. I have, and did quite well, thank you, ready for more grip, seeking advice...

My class allows DOT Rs, but presently I can't really afford to spend the $1k+ for dedicated track tires since I also need to buy street rubber. Was thinking of NT01's and roughing it out on the street with them for a while until I could afford street rubber, but guy at tire store (who does autocross) says they don't heat up enough to grip during such a short run.

Considering getting RE11 or AD08R for street and running those until I can afford DOT R's.

However, just found a set of used Hoosier H20 with 4/32" for $200. My club has 2 practice days before the next event, so I imagine I could wear them down to near slick pretty quickly. But, they are only 245's. So, question is, how will worn 245 hoosier H20 grip (on a dry track) compared to wider (275 or 285) max/extreme performance street tire (eg RE11, AD08R, etc)? If they'd be even close it'd be worth the $200 just to avoid the wear on my street tires (I'll be going to those two practice days either way).

Rain tires really are meant for wet tracks, and wearing them down to slicks will not make them grip well at all. Hoosier doesn't recommend running the H20 compound as a substitute for a dry tire and neither do I. Just save your $200 and consider getting a set of used DOT R compound tires if you're looking for a deal.
