It's going very slowly, so I may be locked up here for a while. I'm hoping we can work something out so I can administer the IV antibiotics to myself at home. I spend 1 hour on the IV pump and the other 23 hours of the day wasting time.

Sorry to hear that- send me your address at the hospital and I'll send you some reading material to help pass the time.

Maybe you can find one on Craigslist or something.
Whooo- you made me laugh with that one! I'm no Microsoft millionaire, just a poor racer who won't be trolling Craigslist for that particular "service".

End-of-the-year update: 2017 has been a year of recovery and I'm happy to report that it's gone well. Medical followups on all my injuries have been positive and everyone from my cardio-thoracic surgeon, lung specialist and spinal ortho agree that further surgery is not indicated. Better yet, I've got most of the clearances I need to pass my racing physical when my SCCA license comes up for renewal this spring.

This past week, High Plains Raceway (HPR) had it's annual customer appreciation test day after a comprehensive repaving a few months earlier. While I followed my neurologist's recommendations to not return to the track for a year, on 12/27/17 (exactly a year from the shunt) I hauled my rig down to HPR and ran my T3-spec Z in three on-track sessions. The day was eerily similar to the year before, with snow still lining the track runoff areas and no big mistakes allowed. Happy to report that while this wasn't a day to set new track records, I ran three sessions that day to test a new suspension setup and gain valuable data on tire temps.

I'll post a new thread soon on my 350Z 2018 racing plans. Happy New Year everybody!

New Year's Day revelation: it's funny how memories can be so vivid. Last year, I was in the hospital on New Year's eve and had recovered enough to look out the darkened window at night. From the fifth floor of the ortho unit, I could see trash blowing across a deserted street near the EMS entrance. The lights of the city were on and I knew people were out celebrating.

But in my room, there wasn't much celebrating. I faced an uncertain future with no guarantee of a return to full health or the activities I love. My wife had gone home, exhausted, and I knew I needed to recover fast to keep her from worrying any more. The road ahead was sure to contain painful or tedious procedures to assess or correct my progress, but I remember thinking how determined I was to get on with it.

It was also etched into my memory that this was not the way I wanted to ever celebrate New Year's Eve ever again. Last night, my wife and I spent a quiet night at home, ate a simple meal, watched a movie and played with our 15-month old puppies.

That's an older photo, but you get the idea. It was absolute heaven!

My recovery took off in January and has continued ever since. By March, I was able to resume my duties as President of the Rocky Mountain Auto Press (RMAP). Here's a photo at the 2017 Denver Auto Show, in which I presented a Nissan exec with an RMAP award for the Titan as 2017 Truck of the Year.

But on New Year's day 2018, I want to once again thank everyone for their good thoughts, wishes and prayers in my long recovery. I've made some wonderful friends on this board (some I've even met) and I've felt that support through the long days, weeks and months. Hopefully, we'll be back doing more of this in 2018:

Best wishes for the coming year! Your fully deserve it. Just read your ordeal and path to recovery and I've got no doubts you are made of the right stuff and an inspiration to all.

Ummm, damm well better. Don't forget, you reserved a pit crew for the Runoffs out here in California and we've been practicing the 3-sec F1 style tire changes all winter!

Hah- tell the pit crew to take a break. There's still the little matter of qualifying for the Runoffs. This year I'll have two former Runoffs champs (including the defending National champ) in division, along with a brace of Porsches to contend with. Looking forward to the fight, but have a lot of work to do once spring starts!

Psh, a mere trifle for ya. Don't worry about no steenkin' Porches. (Oooops, sorry, SmoothDave. Hahahaha!)

Seriously, for you to get back into the cage when a mere year ago at this time, you were doubting a possible return, is a wonderful thing! Good luck this season!!

Vicarious regards,

Mic
