I really need to get a roll bar in my car and I've found a custom shop to do it for a reasonable price. That price depends on me gutting the car myself. The headliner will have to come out, probably permanently.

This morning it occurred to me that there are side curtain airbags within the headliner.

Has anyone removed these that can give me tips on how to do it safely? Can they be put back in place without the headliner?

If removed permanently will I get an airbag warning light they way you do if you remove the OEM seat?

If so, can you add one of those little capacitor things to fool the car into thinking they are still there?

Any thoughts on safety with roll bar+race seat+6 point harness with and/or without side curtain airbags? Seems like they could still be useful with a roll bar (this will not be a full cage.)

 

They are separate from the headliner and simple to remove. I'm sure the resistor would work, but really at that point, just gut it all.

 

If they are separate from the headliner I might leave them in place. Still wanting to hold on to the car as a part time daily driver. Hard to let go off that. I might even replace the front half of the headliner forward of the main hoop.

They are separate, like terras said they come out easily. Just disconnect the battery when you do to be safe.

 

As someone who has stripped the Z33 interior for a rollcage, it's not difficult to remove the headliner and side roof airbags. If you're installing a roll bar and race seat, you are likely going to change the seating position and hip level, so the roof airbags may not deploy properly. I'd suggest padding the areas of the roll bar near your head with offset padding to prevent any contact.

 

I gutted the rear of my car to get ready for the roll bar install and while I was at it I removed the headliner. However, where my main hoop will be there is no room to be gained by removing the headliner so I put it back in. The installer said that was fine.
