Default Newbie wants advice

I participated in my first autocross today and it was a great experience. I know the way to improve my driving is to practice. I would like to practice outside of organized races to get better.

Does anyone have suggestions for exercises between autocross events to learn to drive faster through the cones?

What you can do is to find some industrial building for rent with big parking lot behind. There are a lot of those in my area. Than set up course with your own cones. I'm not sure how legal it is, since technically idiot cop can charge you for recless driving is he see you. So you better make sure parking lot can't be seen from the street.

You can buy smaller cones in sport stores. I have some "soccer" cones for $1 for a piece or so. They are smaller than real autox cones but also easy to handle/carry in the car.

Do a driver school like Evolution performance driving. And a lot of local scca clubs offer schools. Like there is one in Jacksonville the weekend of the 20th its a one day class held by local autoxer's. Ask the scca in you'r area, they will send you in the right direction.

The first Evolution school was a lot of fun. You probably get more runs in during one of those for a couple hundred bucks than you would if you run a full season, plus you have access to some pretty good instructors.

BTW, here is the website:

i fully recommend going to the evolution schools if one is in your area. i went to one in jax, fl last year and it was the best "mod" i have ever spent money on. one day with them will make you faster than any amount of money spent on modding your car.
