Okay, I've had lots of inquiries regarding this gauge pod but the time it takes to make one just doesn't justify the amount of money I have to charge. It was never my intention to make money off of this thing but it looks damn good and I think every Z owner should do this. Here is a step by step on how to make this pod. This is what we start with.

 

Position the gauge pod so the all four edges are flush with the pillar. Screw it down good on all four corners.

 

Start grinding away the edges of the pauge pod so the edge becomes flush with the pillar. You are actually grinding away some material on the pllar too because you will be adding material back later.

This is where you start applying the fiberglass. Don't ask me how to do fiberglass. It's real easy. Just read the instruction on the can. Applying the fabric is optional. When I do fiberglass, I always apply fabric. Some folks only use the resin. Yes, it's much stronger if you use the fabric, but then again, it's not a part that's going to see a whole lot of stress. It's your call.

 

this is what it will look like after applying the resin. Don't worry about over applying. It'll just take longer to sand. But it's better to have more material and and sand then having not enough material. Every time you need to add more material, you have to wait till it dries to sand again.

 

Hah, whoops, he must have decided to take pictures and accidently got the Ferrari emblem in there.

 

Once it dries, go back and take the screws out and apply fiberglass to cover up the holes.

 

Now it's just sanding. Start with 180 then finish off with 320. Here's what it looks like primed.

 

Is there a particular paint color that matches the OEM pillar or should we just paint both pillars so they match. Thanks for the write. This definitely seems like it is very easy to do. Also, which pod are you using? Is it a generic Autometer part?

We ended up painting both pillars. Adn yes, it's just a generic Autometer part.

How do you remove the pillar? I couldn't find it in the FSM.

Man that pod looks great. Do you 3 pods would fit? It looks like the 3rd one might be mounted to close to the roof and be out of normal road vision?

 

I am going to try this this weekend if I can locate 2 pods locally. If not, I will have to order them. I will post the outcome and how difficult it is for someone that has never worked with fiberglass. Hopefully I do not have to end up buying a new pillar.
