Angry 2004 15K miles, dealer tells me i need new brakes and that is a long life for them

WTF? Anyone hear this before?

Dealer told me my brakes needed replacement and that 15K was a long life for Z brakes. I drive about 8 miles a day to and from work no hard driving, i've had plenty of other cars in my life and the earliest i've ever had to change my brakes was at 40-50K (this was on a lemon *** chevy camero).

It's a 2004 Touring, the dealer said they wouldn't warrenty them and that i'd have to pay to have them replaced.

bah, good excuse for you to replace with them hawk hps pads. better braking quieter braking with alot less brake dust.

Before the Z, I wasn't really into cars. So I would listen to everything dealers would say liek replacing my brakes and rotors at the same time. Now I know how to replace brake pads and rotors and know more about my car not to listen to the dealership.

I suggest you start to get to know your car. Jack it up and remove your tires and take a look at your brake pads. It's an awsome feeling to know more about your care and know for sure if you need brakes.

If you are not incline to getting to know your car, I suggest you buy an extra set of brake pads ahead of time, and when your brake pad wear indicator starts to make noise, then you have the extra pad in hand to get them replaced.

And people don't ususally warrenty brake pads/tires/rotors since they are wear items.

what is the average brake life of our cars? I know the brembos are supposed to wear out quicker than the stocks but 15k is pretty quick.

While a certain amount of how long your brakes last depends on HOW you brake, 15K miles seems incredibly short to me. Is your 8 mile commute lots of stop and go? If not, I agree with ZlleH....You should put your car up on a jack and check 'em. Some dealers are pretty liberal with their definition of what "needs to be replaced" means.

I just replaced mine on my '04. I have about 18k but thats with a lot of heavy stop and go traffic. I'd definitely do them on your own, it's too easy.

Just as a gauge: I have 30000+ on my BREMBO's with mixed City/Highway and somewhat aggresive driving..they have plenty left.

I have ~18k on my pads with lots of hard driving and I'm gonna get them replaced soon. Oh but I'm turbo'd also.. I'm expecting at least another 2k miles out of them..

I auto-x ocassionaly and I replaced my 03 Track brakes at 41K miles. I could have made them last another 5k miles if I wanted.

I think your dealer is BS'ing you.

dealer told me my fronts were at 20% at my 18k oil change last month. recently i've noticed they squeal a bit when its really quiet and my windows are rolled down... at 19.5k rite now.. i figure by 22k they'll be gone...

i guess nissan made their factory pads to wear out fast so they don't damage the rotors.......i've just finished replacing the rear pads 25 minutes ago....they had at least 65% left but i changed them anyway... it was hellof dirty. I replaced the fronts a few days ago and it was like 25% left. You don't want to wait till the wear indicator hitting the rotors before pad replacement, cuz i don't want to replace the rotors.... quess i'm a true believer of preventive maintenance.

Thats just squeaky brakes. Believe me, you can tell the difference between squeaky brakes and a wear indicator. A wear indicater makes noise even when you aren't even pressing on the brakes.

unfortunatly its true...

and most of the time the rotors can not be turned down either since the tollernaces are pretty high...

had ours done at 25k miles or so on the Z. I was shocked. My FX has 25k on it and no problems, and its a much heavier vehicle. I was an idiot and didn't ask the dealer to keep the pads to see them.

I would do it - have them save the pads. When you get there if they thicker than 2 or 3/32nds (or so) I would raise hell with the dealer.

I have a friend with 03 that dealer told him he needed brakes at 21k. We replaced them with Hawk. Brakes were about 1/3 lining left. He's a moderate driver with mixed suburban driving.
