Default Coilovers HKS Hipermax 2 or Tein Mono Flex?

Dear All,

I just bought a Dec 06 Z and was thinking of my first mod.

Recently i did find that at high speeds at the highways in Malaysia, the suspension was kinda soft and the car felt bouncy. That made me lower my speed to ahndle my car better but an EVO9 was waiting for to overtake.
I later found out that the EVo stock suspension setup are much stiffer than the Z.

Also, i am thinking of going to the track at least 6 times yearly.
I am thinking of getting coilovers but here in Singapore, there are not much places good enough to fix them up and service them from time to time.

Only 2 places do a good job adn they carry either a HKS Hipermax2 or the Tein MonoFlex.

Please advise me which should i go for as its my first modifications and i wanna get it right.
Prices for these two are approximately the same.
Thanks,
KB.

HKS stopped the U.S. importation of the II awhile back, but it still can be purchased from dealers that are getting them somehow or another. They are still listed and spec'd on HKS's Japaneese site.

The two coilovers do have differances, though both are marketed to the "track" person.

HKS II (Monotube construction, adjustable dampners)
Spring rates 504/504

Tein Mono Flex (Monotube construction, adjustable dampners, full height adjustability without effecting spring preload www.tein.com/mfpdamp.html www.tein.com/msve.html
Spring rates 783/783

Notice that the Mono Flex uses dramatically higher spring rates. Going that high on public roads requires a very carefull examination as you will likely encounter less them smooth roads where proper tire to road contact might not be possible, of course that's for the buyer to figure out. Tein does generally have a +or- 112lbs spring rate range that one can play with.

ding ^

those teins are going to be obnoxious on the road, unless its paved like glass and you use 17s

Hipermax II are still made but as G mentioned, not brought into the US as part of the normal HKS lineup...but very much "gettable"

Im sorry but i do not quite understand about the higher spring rates.
Does that mean higher spring rates will have a lot of difficulty handling street roads that are not smooth?

Appreciate your help but its still hard coming to a conclusion. Thanks.

Hiper Max III's just came out.

$1999. Those are way better than the Teins, but more performance oriented. If you want something more comfortable you can do the HiperMax LS - $1699.

Us or Z1 can get them for you no problem.

Cheers,

Gary

Yes.

But I have no idea how your roads are, they may be really nice, I just do not know.

Gary, do the III's have full height adjustablity? Same spring rates as the II's?

I wasn't trying to steer him to comfort level coilovers at all. I was warning him that 783lbs rates on the Mono Flex on the street may not be productive, I wouldn't suggest LS coilovers since it just wouldn't go with the flow that his two product choices suggest he's after.

This is what I found out about the Hypermax III's for the 350Z

Looks like they added HDP valving (Hiper Digressive Piston) and rubber upper mounts. Plus they changed the spring rates to 502/560, sorry higher rear rate system's leave me cold, begs the question if you can get 502lbs rears with ease. Weird thing is, the picture of the coilover I saw on the HKS site in Japan sure looks like it has full length height adjustablity, but the specs make no mention of that feature.

Sorry, but they dont have it here.
Even if i import it here. Not sure who is qualified to service those coilovers. Also, im gonna be charged a ridiculous price for it.

Best Choices here, are HKS Hipermax 2, Tein Mono Flex and the Cuscos

I would think the III's have height adjustability since the II's do...don't most coilovers?

Sorry ment to say full length adjustable height, II's don't have that, Mono flex and Cusco's do.

It should come down to where you stand on the Mono Flex's spring rates. If that's rules them out, Cusco's softer rear spring rates and full height adjustability vs the II's even spring rates and inability to adjust height without effecting spring preload. Really I don't see any of your choices as having issues other then picking based on the best overall specs for you.

Hey I'm from malaysia! The roads in malaysia arent that great and I believe you don't want something that stiff.
If i'm not mistaken, with a super stiff suspension & bad road conditions and you'll be sort of bouncing around.

Hi,

The springs have a new type of valving that is supposed to be better for both track and street (never rode in them yet). They are twin adjustable (lower base & spring seat). The standard rates are 9kg/10kg which is a bit higher than the Hiper Max II, but probably it shouldn't negatively affect the ride because of the new valving changes.

Thanks,

Gary

We can do the Zeals no problem - Function XS, Super Function R, etc. We've sold tons of them for Suby's and EVOs. We can also do Cusco - we have a sale on the Zero 2's for $1499 shipped right now (special order).

Cheers,

Gary
