Default Duct work to stock Non-Brembo brakes

I spent part of today doing some duct work to draw air towards my front non-Brembo calipers. I am doing this for TRACK purposes. I am a cheap bastard and don't feel like spending $1500 on a big brake system. That being said I got a 6 ft. x 2" flexible exhaust hose from the auto store and 2 PVC 1&3/4" 90 degree elbows and various other hardware pieces. I was thinking about drawing air from either side of the radiator where you can see those square panels, but didn't want to screw with the air flow inside. Instead, I will mount the hose underneath the air dam and direct the air towards the calipers. The hose will be attached directly to the center plastic under-shrowd. I will try to take pics later this week. Please comment or criticize, I have never done this before, just copying work that I have seen at other performance shops on other cars.

I'd try to duct it to the rotor rather than the caliper, since the rotor is the heatsink in a braking system (not the the caliper doesn't get hot of course). Maybe try using some of the attachments you can get for a Shop-Vac to use as both an intake and and outlet for the air so you can scoop alot of air and sort-of angle it and distribute it how you want. Just a thought.

I'll change your mind later this week when I post pics of those StopTechs installed on my Z. Two Track model owners saw them this weekend in the box, not even installed, and went...

My problem was actually with the caliper and not the rotor. The caliper piston boot fried and had holes in it after a track weekend. The stock silver paint burnt completely off and turned white in some areas. The rotors were a little grooved, but not warped and were still in spec. As it stands now, I have the nozzle aimed at the whole caliper/rotor complex, though it is not attached directly. I hooked up the exhaust of my shop vac to the hose and there is a lot of postive airflow directed at the caliper/rotor. I just don't have any experience to know if it is enough to make a difference. Does anyone think I should take off the rotor guard/pie plate? They seem pretty useless.

Great idea! Try to keep the piping as straight and short as possible. Get creative and show us some pics.

Just went for a test run after I buttoned up the front. The ducts are still there after going 120! I probably have some adjustment to do, but I feel pretty good about how it turned out. I ended up using ~2ft. of 2" flexible metal pipe and channeling the air at the end with a PVC elbow. It does not go below the lowest point of the car, so it should not scuff or drag. I will post some preliminary pics soon and final pics on the car when I get around to it.

Lots of guys with vettes are doing this, one guy I saw cut the bottom half of a Mobil one quart bottle, then connected the hose to the end and used it as an intake vent...
here is the whole thread if it helps...

Again, I am interested in function not looks. It is underneath the car so it is not visible. The foil tape is on the front end of the flex pipe in an attempt to keep it from snagging the frayed edge on anything.

I believe someone on here was considering taking out the side markers for intake points. Just a thought.

Thumbs up

I'm not sure how much clearance is on the other side of the engine splash cover (haven't taken mine off for an oil change in a while)...but I was just thinking... If there is room for the tube on the other side of the cover, you could just put another PVC elbow on the front end of the tube, and cut a hole out for it to hang down through at the front of the car. That would eliminate the tube itself hanging down, since it seems a bit more fragile, and prone to coming loose or snagging on something.

great idea Rob! I agree could be more visually pleasing, and a thought we were tossing around, how about get some black or chrom exhaust tips(oval shaped) and mount the hose to there to sortve funnel the air in, would prob look better too.

kinda like this
