Been searching around the forums for some time now, for the perfect coilover for my needs. My budget is $1500, looking for something mainly for street use, maybe an occasional track event every once in awhile. As a personal preference from previous cars I have owned, I like a comfortable but firm ride/handling, but I guess that is where the dampening would come to play.

I am currently lowered on Tanabe GF 210s, and the car still sits somewhat high, I would like to eliminate the tire/fender gap, which would be another 1'' or so all around. So I would like to be able to adjust from a somewhat stock height to as low as ~2''. The car is riding on Toyo T1Rs 255/35/19 and 275/35/19, in case tire selection makes a bit of a diffference.

After searching a couple of weeks now, a few coilovers I have in mind are the Cusco Zero 2, JIC FLT A1, Stance. Or BC racing as budget setup, seems to be some good results on BC coilovers from members on the forum. Will the Zero 2's achieve the drop I want on the car? The Cusco's seem the way to go, alot of positive feedback on them, but unclear on the lowering specs.

Im in the same position right now and I have about the same budget.

Stance GR+ was my initial choice because I wanted to be able to slamm the car. After doing alot of research, I found out that the true coilover design that Stance uses will not be the best set-up. When using the true coilovers in the rear, your putting all the stress and weight on one point and it begins to wear immaturely. We probably think this is the cause of all the squeaking people have been getting
from them. Now I hear they have gone back to the OEM style rear (where the springs are separate from the shocks) and this has eliminated the problems they were having. This needs to be confirmed, if true then maybe stance isnt such a bad bet. I did some research on the BC coilovers as well and someone posted them with there max drop and there was still a slight gap in the rear. Not to mention you can stay under $1500 and find a better coilover than BC. So I would throw BC's out. I've heard great things about KW, Tanabe Fives and the Cuscos.

Here's my suggestions in order. These should all be available for about $1700 or less. These are approx quotes from our vendors here.

KW variant 3's $1,700
KW variant 2's $1,400
Tanabe Five's $1,400
Cusco Zero 1 $1,350
Stance GR+ $1,150

Id like to see more Info about the Tanabe Fives and the Cusco Zero 1's. I want to know how low they can go as well. Im trying to get no gap all the way around and I want to know if they are capable.

Nice writeup, that definitely helps! I wouldn't mind spending the extra 200 maybe for the KW Variants IIIs. As far as the stance coilovers go, I heard as well that the true coilover design will cause some issues down the line. Anyone else have any recommendations for some coilovers?

for a comfortable ride that's still firm enough for a hpde, you can't beat the bilstein pss9.

 

I love the Zero-2's. I didn't even have to set after I put 'em in the car. They were the exact ride height I was looking for so I just left them as they came. Adam at Z-1 has them for the lowest prices I've seen. $1600 for the non-pillow ball version. I know it's and extra hundred past your budget, but a lot of people recommend them.

 

i'm patiently waiting for those to get off backorder.

note to the OP: the PSS9's rears are adjustable at the bottom of the shock, very easy access compared to most other setups.

 

I love, love, love my BC's. You can't beat the price on them either. With the money you save you can pick up camber correction kits from SBC for the front and rear, and have a TOTally adjustable suspension.

 

Not entirely true... in my case there is a small gap since my Z hav ebeen gutted and I run a CF hatch with lexan rear window.

In my buddies Z with stock hatch / glass, and interior the drop is perfect without being on the lowest setting like mine are.

 

I like my Greddy.. they feel great on the street.. had a buddy of mine yesterday in the car .. he drives a GTI.. he said the car felt really good and soaked up the bumps perfectly

 

I have them too, Doug. In fact I got them from the same guy that sold you yours. What settings do you run?

 

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It looks like its between the Cusco Zero 2, Bilsteins, or the KW Variant 3. After searching on all 3 coilovers, everyone seems to be satisfied with the ride quality. But which one of these coilovers would be able to drop the car around 2''? What I am trying to do is have no fender gap. With the GF210, I still have a 1'' gap all around the car.
