Default Stoptech or other big brake owners

I've had my Stoptech 13.1 brake kit on for about 6 weeks. I've been extremely pleased with the performance. However I've recently (within the last 2 weeks) started to experience some popping when the brakes are cooling. It is definitely a "metal cooling" popping similar to the sound an engine makes after you park, but the brakes are slightly louder. The rotors pop about every 20-30 seconds 3-5 minutes after stopping the car.
I emailed Stoptech and they were very responsive but could not shed light onto the situation and why the brakes are making this sound. I've checked the brakes and everything is tight (Stoptech suggested I check the hat on the rotor).
The popping sound seems to be much more prominent in hot weather (+90 degrees).
I'm not too worried about it -rotors are not cracked and the brakes feel as great as ever. Is anyone / has anyone experienced a similar sound with their big brake kit???

Don't worry. I've got the same noise coming from the rotors. I assume it's coming from where the aluminum hat meets the iron rotor, and because of the way the two materials conduct heat differently.

It didn't make these noises this weekend at the track because of the cool down laps. OTOH, in traffic, you don't really get enough distance to cool them down going from light to light.

That had been mentioned to me by a buddy. But thought it was odd since it just started. Actually a bunch of us went driving in the mountains this weekend (about 70 degrees) and I heard almost no noise coming from the brakes. The fact that your getting the same noises confirms that what I'm hearing isn't an isolated case.

Thanks droid

To add another datapoint.

I have heard no such noise on my 13" StopTechs but then, I have not listened for it specifically. I'll check next time I drive the car (over the weekend).

Jason- let me know. Not sure if the recent hot temp (90+ degrees) has something to do with it, but I didn't hear any of this when the temp was in the 60's.

failsaf3, would you please speak up? I can't hear you.....

I haven't heard anything yet like that....I do hear the low speed SQUEELING from the Panther +'s though......hey, I race.

STOPTECH'S are the best investment for a track vehicle. Bar none.

It is DEFINITELY temp related, more so to the ambient temps of the air in the environment. Doesn't do this at night in the 70s, nor when I first had them on before we got into the 90s here in Dallas.

Nothing to worry about. The noise is from the brakes cooling. With any floating rotor system, the aluminum hat is mounted to the rotor with pins not bolts. At this interface, the rotor hole is actually an oval slot which allows for the hat to expand quicker than the cast iron rotor. We use a conical shaped, inconel washer on this pin to keep the rotor from rattling under normal driving.
So, you are hearing the slip of the conical washer against the rotor as the hat shrinks.
It sounds like an exhaust cooling for similar reasons.

I just wanted to add my reply so everyone can see my avatar, I think that it fits nicely with this group, by the way, I do plan on buying a set of stoptechs, so thanks for the info.

Nice mid-shaft tibial fracture! Did you get a nail for that?
