Alright so I'm trying to replace a stud and i was following the DIY on how to do it. I took off the brackets for the caliper and now the rotor is supposed to slide right off. I used a rubber mallet, wd40, kept pulling but it just won't even move. Is there another method to remove the rotor. BTW its the passenger rear. Any help would be appreciated.

 

Make sure your parking brake is off. If it is, keep beating the $hit out of the back of the rotor evenly around. It'll come off....

 

Spray with some penetrating fluid. Let sit for 10 minutes. Do you have access from the rear? I suppose that you do not want to damage the rotor. Place a 2x4 against the back of the rotor. Hit it with a big steel hammer.

 

Yea i did make sure the parking brake was off. I guess I will have to keep beating it than. I wasn't sure if there are any other bolts holding it in place. Id rather not risk damaging the rotor with a big steel hammer lol.

 

Think about this man. RUBBER, bounces. Therefore you are transferring NO energy. You need a dead blow (which is made of rubber, BUT, it's different, it won't bounce back, therefore the energy is being transfered to the rotor, not staying in the rubber mallet.) And personally, I always use a small sledge to knock rotors loose. Just wrap the sledge with a cloth or shirt.

 

Yeah man, just keep beating the crap out of it. It'll come off eventually...

 

I put everything back together since I needed the car but I'm going to attempt this in the morning again. Thanks for the help guys.

 

do NOT just wrap with a measly shirt or cloth....that is a great way to mess up the rotor

I got it off by beating at it like you said. I used a block of wood and hit the wood to transfer the energy to the rotor since the rubber malllet didn't work. Thanks again for the help!

I guess so. 5 yrs of ownership and and it felt like I was trying to fix a 30 yr old car lol.

 

Rotors rust within seconds of coming into contact with water. Don't feel like it a 30 y/o car! If it were that old you wouldn't have gotten the rotor off! LOL

UMW350Z - Well, if you use the whole tshirt there is plenty of padding there. I've done it a million times on various cars and trucks. And it takes me only a few second to pop a rotor off.

 

FWIW- I had a stuck rotor when I did my front brakes. My neighbor came by and saw me trying to hit the back side of the rotor to knock it loose (not a lot of room to swing the hammer). He took a block of wood and a hammer and smacked the FRONT (outer) side of the rotor... and it popped right off.

 

 

A big hammer is good.

 

Buy or rent (available from most auto stores) a brake puller.
