Default how to test if shocks are damaged

A while back, i installed S.Tech springs on my car. The font driver side started making noise. Everytime i would go over a bump, it would make a thud.

Now... i dont know if this was due to a wrong installation of the spring, or the shock going back. Is there a way i can get my shock tested ? I want to sell my stock shocks except i dont want to sell it before making sure it works.

thanks.

TBH, I wouldn't trust them. They're probably going to take a quick look at your suspension then (depending on how old the car is) say to you that they need to get replaced. Or at the very least say that they're close to being done and would recommend changing them as soon as you can.

so who would know if they are good without testing them on a car?

How do you know it's the shock? Could be a loose suspension piece.

But to test the shock specifically, you probably need to at the very least inspect it for leakage. If you still suspect it, you'll have to take it out and compress it (if it's shot, it will compress way too easy)

You can test a shock by removing it and pulling it apart.
If you can pull the piston easily from the cylinder it may have failed.
If the piston is covered with oil its done.

A typical shock will have more resistance during its extension cycle than its compression cycle

thanks guys. I will test it. I know there is no oil on it, so thats not the problem. Jeff, as you have said, i know it probably was a suspension piece that i messed up on the install, but i cant sell the shocks based on a guess. I need to be sure.

thanks for the suggestions.

its already removed and apart so all i need to do is pull on it.
I dont know how easy is "easy" to pull. I guess i will compare the left to the right.

thanks

...? Lowering springs do not automatically trash shocks. If that was true, all four of them would make the sound.
Many people run lowering springs on oem shocks. That's why they make and sell them.

My stock shocks lasted less than a year after RS-R ti2000 springs. (Only .6" drop and just a hair stiffer than stock.)

Just a note: Unlike softer sprung cars, my Z didn't get lazy and "floaty" like my old 67 chevelle with bad shocks. No, the Z started to "jiggle". Most obvious just after coming to a dead stop.

Why they make shock dynos for people what want to know exact parameters.

That will work. You will recognised right away if the shock has failed.

I had no idea testing could be that technical. Thanks. We backyard mechanics often have to wing it.

Or just assume that the shocks are worthless by 4 years or 60,000 miles........historically this has been the case with Nissan since my 1985 300z, thru 88 Pathfinder, and 90 Q45 and 94 Q45.......................I've replaced 10 sets of shocks on my Nissans/Inf.

After removal [none leaked] but none would self expand and a child could compress and expand them without effort.

Being mounted inside the springs fools you until you disassemble more modern designs make it easier to just disco the bottom to test on car.
