Talking Stock Rotor Replacement

Greetings,

Those of you who have replaced your stock rotors (as I am sure many of you have), how long did they last? I've got 21k miles on the car right now and my stock pads are pretty much shot. The stealership informed me that they recommend I replace my front rotors as well as pads at a price, if I heard him correctly, of $545.00 (Of course, he was going to give me a "deal" for $520 )

In the opinion of the general public, is 21,000 miles a reasonable lifespan for OE rotors at the mercy of a moderately aggressive driver? I don't want to replace them if it's highly unnecessary.

There are some great pad/rotor/line/fluid package deals on the vendor forum so I just wanted to know if now would be the appropriate time in the car's life to capitalize.

Thanks in advance for your input,
Phil

I got about 80,000 out of my original rotors. That includes 6 track days and daily driving on Hawk HP+ pads. If the car stops smoothly then just put new pads on it. Don't turn the rotors if there is nothing wrong with them. You'll just shorten their life.

I did however have my original rotors turned once, but I'm not sure what the mileage was. What I do remember is that it was only a bandaid. The pulsing was back again in a couple months. So I'd say 60,000-80,000 depending on useage.

I got 25K and mine are only half worn...I think $300-$350 max is fair for pads and rotors on the front. $500 plus is a lil much IMO

i replaced all 4 rotors, pads, added stainless lines with new fluid for ~$387. of course, it was a DIY job for me. and you could still find cheaper parts if you searched.

I won't use anything less than Brembo or OEM Nissan for rotors. I've tried others, friends have tried others, and they don't last very long. I dished out $400 for 4 OEM Nissan rotors from the dealership since I know I'm going to beat the crap out of them and I don't want to buy new ones next year and do the work again.

Typical auto parts store brand (Autozone, CarQuest, Advance), and another friend tried some ebay drilled/slotted rotors and they are pulsating within a year.

Thanks for the feedback guys... I'll probably just order some hawk pads, stainless lines, and fluid and be done with it.

Have you pulled the wheel off yourself and looked at the pads and rotors? Dealers are good at telling you need brakes (pads and or rotors).

I do the inspection myself and either do them myself or have a friend help. Much cheaper and easier than you think to do.

1,000 or 100,000 miles no matter. The question is not miles. I am surprised when members are told that they need new rotors, but do not ask “How thick are they?”

“How thick are they?”

Just over 40k on mine, they are still in good shape, though probably in need of turning soon.

So how do you inspect your rotor and pads? Is there something to gauge against to determine if they are worn? Thank you

Yes. You measure rotor and pad for minimum thickness.

Wow...that was enlightening. What IS the minimum thickness for a set of rotors? Is it marked somewhere on the outer edge? Is there a standard?

I have some OEM rotors(front & rear) that I took off my car after 10,000 miles and guess what they're for sale. I have an 03 and they've been boxed up since 03.
Anyone interested PM me.

Standard (non brembo) rotors, have a new thickness of 24mm and a replacement thickness of 22mm.

I haven't measured mine yet (use a micrometer) but a guesstimate just looking at the lip on the outer edge, i'd say they've got to be pretty close.

I'm looking at possible EBC OE replacements or their USR slotted. about $100 for the front OE's or $170 for the slotted.

I just replaced my OEM rotors at 70k.

I don't know the depth, but they still worked great. I ordered premium slotted rotors from R1 concepts, stoptech ss lines, ate super blue, and hawk hps pads.

I think all in all I spent ~$550 installed, but I did the work myself.

Took about 10 hours because one of the bolts and washers that came with the stoptech lines was damaged and it took me a little while to figure out the leak and find a replacement OEM bolt.

The stoptech kit is great though, don't let me dissuade your from buying it.
