Unhappy Rear Rattle is killing me

Hi Guys,

I have a 2008 350z, and a rattle that comes from the back is killing me.
It rears its ugly had when driving on uneven road (rattle rattle) and i can even hear what i believe to be the source of the sound going over speed bumps. I have had it back to the dealer 3 times and they seem more interested in charging me $150 to tighten bolts (not covered under new car warranty?) and doing a service then fixing the prob. The problem seems to lessen when the car is warm...

This really is driving me nuts.

I have removed spare tire/tools/everything and i cant figure it out.

Its hard to get an exact possy on the noise as you all know about the sounds from the rear of the car, but i reckon its something to do with the rear suspension?

If anyone has any advice that would be sweet.

Cheers alot,

Richo

You say '***** on the noise'?

It could be a million different things, there is more or less no possible way for us to help you with this. You need a mechanic to do a ride along and he can try and pin point it.

If you have tried 3 times at dealer... learn to live with it.

+1 this is true.

however, what i would do is strip down the entire rear interior and do the drive on which you hear the noises. if you hear it, then it should be very easy to pinpoint (interior, exterior, etc.) as you have no interior panels/parts in the back. if you DO NOT hear it, then you've narrowed it down to those panel pieces. put one piece back, do the drive, put one back, do the drive, and so on and so forth until you do hear it.

Is it loud enough to be heard on a video? Maybe then we could help.

have a buddy lay down in the trunk then drive around (an EMPTY LOT) to see if HE can pin point the rattle.... just make sure he/she is small enough and i am not responsible if you get pulled over and get a ticket, this is purely just an idea....lol....lol... GOOD LUCK OP

Just wait till you get more miles on the car, rattles will start to come from everywhere. Just turn the music up, because once you solve that rattle, 3 more will pop up. If you don't learn to live with it, it will drive you absolutely insane...

OMG what did i get into when i bought this car!!!

Well, I am going to try all your ideas aside from the ones that say "put up with it : ) because i will just go the hardware store and monoxide myself first.

My rear suspension really does sound wierd (2 sounds) when going over a speed bump..

I am going to tear it apart piece by piece next day off.

Thanks for the tips guys, i am even going to try the rubber band trick.

Rattles drive me crazy as well. Its probably just a metal clip somewhere. Your best bet it to just stick a small person back there and drive around to see where its coming from.

Do you have a spoiler? I have a Nismo-v1 on my car where the tips are just barely above the body of the car. Over most uneven roads, the tips would hit rapidly the hatch, causing an unbearable rattling. A small piece of foam fixed that.

I have an 08 Z and had the same issue right after I drove it off the showroom floor.

Took it to the service centre and they did the whole tighten bolts thing and see how you go. The sound/rattle only occured at low speeds, as soon as I got past 2nd gear the road noise would drown it out.

I took it back again the next day and said it was still there and told them to check it out. They got a senior guy on the case... turned out to be a loose heat shield (or so they told me..) sound is now gone.

Provided you can replicate the sound... they should fix it for you. The Z shouldn't rattle.
