I think what you're trying to say that when comparing the location of the spring in the spring bucket to a spring around the damper, the spring in the bucket is at a mechanical disadvantage relative to the spring around the damper due to it being closer to the axis of rotation. A spring in the bucket will have the same leverage as a lower rate spring around the shock.

I've never heard the half-the-spring-rate rule of thumb though, so that's beyond me.

Google and read about motion ratio. Also read this thread a bit more, info has been posted. I believe it's actually .62 , close to 50%
