Lockout washer question...

Why are lock out washers for the 350z square and cost an arm and a leg?

Can we not just use a regular washer? Any specific reason they are square?

They dont have to be square but they do have to be sized to perfectly fit between the two notches and they need to be pretty thick/strong so they dont buckle under the pressure.
