Stoptech Pad/Rotor Replacement?
If I want to change out the pads on my 13" Front kit, where can I buy the ST40 pads for a good price. Are they the same size as a normal car model since most sites sort by car...
I'd like to run a lower dust pad for the street and throw the Axxis Ultimates back on for the track. I hear Hawk HPS pads are good for low dust. Found some ST40 sizes here:
http://www.splparts.com/Nissan/Brake/Pad.htm
Anyplace cheaper
Is there a better pad than the Axxis ultimates for the track that is still kind to rotor wear?
Where should I buy replacement rotors when the time comes?
Thanks.

Talk to Matt at Carbotech for the pads... you probably want the Bobcat pads for the street and light track use... great grip, low dust, low noise. For a dedicated track pad, get the Panther Plus or the XP. I've used Panther Plus on the street and the track with no problems.

As for the rotors... you can only get Stoptech rotors from Stoptech or an authorized Stoptech dealer.

I'd recommend getting a second set of pads that you specifically use for the track. I would never use Hawk HPS or Axxis Ultimates on the track. Matt at Carbotech is great, or you can try Cobalt Friction (where I order my pads from).
350ed,
I'd recommend going with Axxis Deluxe Plus for the street for your ST-40's. Retail is only $54 for the set. These are the best pads for you if you still want performance with little dusting and noise. The HPS is a fine choice for the rear.
Do not use the Axxis Ultimate on the track...they will not hold up. I would go with a race compound. PFC 97 is a great choice...they are pricey at $268 retail, but they are good. A Hawk HT-10 would work for the front as well...they are $225 retail.
You aren't going to find a pad that is good for everything. There will always be compromises. A pad that has a high top end temp range doesn't work good when cold, and typically eats rotors. A low temp range pad burns up with heat. You need to have separate pads for street and track...bottom line.
Dave Zeckhausen or Jason at Performance Nissan both frequent this board and could help you out.

I'm not a dealer or distributor, so I'm sharing what I learned this past summer using the Stoptech 13" kit. I swapped the Axxis pads before my 1st HPDE event to Panther +. GREAT track pad! They held up for 7 15/16 days of track abuse.
Very consistent feel and I never noticed any fade. I also braked hard enough to spin the tires on the rims! That's right, one set. I also left them on all summer with daily use. NO rotor problems, but some low speed squeaks. Not enough to worry about. And definitely not worth changing the pads an extra 14 times.
And the dust is no worse than the Axxis.

Hahahaa...EnthuZ...I should have put a disclaimer on my post...results may vary!
Seriously though...how you drive your car on the track will seriously affect what will and will not work. If you are on sticky tires, you are an experienced track driver, etc., you'll be a lot harder on brakes. If you're driving 7/10ths on street tires, you may be ok with something less aggressive. I'm not trying to recommend anything you don't need. When I drive my Z on the track, I need more aggressive pads.

I'll second the recommendation for the really expensive Performance Friction pads - I use their PF01 compound and they last a very long time (8 or so days for me) and are kind enough to the rotors. I am an instructor and drive very hard on the track, and have tried several different track pads with this car - this is the pad that works best for me. But not anyone will necessarily require this. I also don't drive them on the street. I'm using the Carbotech Panther Plus on the rears and they work well (and match well) but don't last very long (about 3-4 days) but this is mainly due to the tinyness of the rear pads on the Z rather than the compound.
Finally, the OP had asked if any other cars use the same pad as the ST40 caliper. THe answer is that Porsche 911s and several other manufacturers also use these pads. This is a great design decision by StopTech as it allows us to use any of the many, many pads available for the 911.
Also, unless you have been to the track only a handful of times, the Axxis ultimates just won't cut it. And even as a newbie you're still using the wrong tool for the job - they are just not track pads. I bet I could completely cook (and destroy) a brand new set in under 15 minutes. Not good.

Jason, I thought you used Carbotech fronts? If you have and switched, what about the PF01's worked better?
Slightly off topic....... are you going to Mid Ohio in April? I could use a good instructor!

Those are definitely the type of details we consider when making a new caliper. Our new billet 2 piston rear to match up with our 13" front kit will use the same rear pad as the 350Z Track Model.

They work better for me than the others in that they last longer (than the Porterfield R4) both in fade resistance and in number of days that they last. The StopTech clube race pad was leaving pad deposit which was causing vibration - the PF01 does not do this. And the Hawk Blue was actually pretty good too but it was not very kind on my rotors (perhaps my fault by jumping on the brakes too soon).
I'd like to make it to Mid-Ohio some day but it is a 9 hour drive for me and I think that the first time I do a 9 hour drive to a track it will be for VIR. Summit Pt, Limerock, Pocono and Watkins Glen are all pretty local to me so I tend to stick around there. Any chance you might make it to one of those tracks over the summer?

Wow, I just figured the ones they shipped with were better for the track, whoops
I'm an infrequent track'er, maybe 2-3 times a year. I'm a beginner+ driver I'd say. I don't think I need a hardcore $250+ set of pads.
I visited the websites listed but can't find any ST40 reference. They all go by vehicle. http://www.carbotecheng.com/appguide-pads.htm has about 7 different types of 911 pads. Anyone have the manu pad part numbers for ST40 pads?
Ferodo 2500's look price competitive.
Thanks for the help folks.

Well, Jason, I know what you mean about the drive. MapQuest says Mid-Ohio is 6 1/2 hours away for me. But the cost is what I paid for 2 days at Road America, AND, the hotels are about 1/3 the price!
Of your list, I'd love to do Watkins Glen again, and VIR sounds awesome. If I didn't feel the need for sticky meats,(shoes?), I could MAYBE swing 1 Right coast trip.........and Mosport??????
Too many GREAT tracks.......too little $$$$$$
Back to brake pads......you should try Panther +'s all around or even their XP's. Then again, if Nick ever comes through with his duct kit, we might get by with street pads!

EnthuZ, it'll be interesting to compare pad performance while we're at Mid-Ohio. I'll be running the Cobalt spec-VR pads, which from what I understand hold up for a very long time. CarGuys runs a few 40 minute sessions in their track events, so I need a pad that lasts longer.

I don't think there is ever a chance that I could do street pads on the track. Even with the biggest ducting kit imagineable!
I really hope Nick actually ships us some stuff soon though. I need to get ready for the season.John: I may make it down to VIR this summer (although I've been saying that for years and stil haven't been able to find the time). But I'll definitely be at SP quite a bit. Right now my SP schedule looks like: April 19-20, May 1-3, July 5-6, August 14-15, October 25-26 and November 6-7. I think I'll make almost all of those dates (April is the one that looks least likely).
But right now I have 47 track days on my calendar and some of them will have to go.
Jason
