Default 3/4 coilover kit?

*Warning. This may be wordy..* So I was browsing Craigslist and I found a guy selling a set of tein comfort sport coilovers for 500 bucks. With 5k miles on them. The guy bought the car around 2.5k miles ago and these coils were on it. The prev. Owner included stock suspension and the car was too low for his driveway so he reinstalled the stock shocks. So naturally, I called about them. Talked him down to 400. But the rear shock from the tein kit aren't included. He has the front coils and the rear springs and all equipment but no rear shocks. They come with rear shocks huh? I can reuse my stockers but should I pick this up? I did a little searching and can't find anywhere to get just the rear shocks. Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Camber kit was already sold

I wouldn't, what good is having half a coilover setup? Your oem rears won't handle the coilover springs and the mismatch won't be good for handling or a stable ride.

That's what I thought too but it's not a true coilover. It's oem style. Still. It's putting way more stress than stock springs.

How does the valving of this mismatch stack up? Would having two totally different sets on the car negatively affect the handling?

I would be skeptic about buying this setup. Was there a reason stated why there are no rear shocks? The Tein CS coilovers can be set to stock height, so why did the owner feel the need to pull these off the car? If possible, i would have the front shocks inspected before purchasing. You can mail them to Tein for an inspection, which is done in California.

Note: Tein CS coilovers need to be rebuilt in Japan for whatever reason. The California location cannot rebuild them. Tein also requires the customer to pay the shipping charges to Japan, which creates an expensive rebuild for those shocks.

I purchased a used set of CS coils and it turned into a disaster. Dishonest seller trying to sell a blown set of coilovers. I was able to get my money back but what a headache.

No as long as the dampeners can handle the spring rates, there is no problem with handling.

Koni yellows are good up to 550lb/in IIRC, thats why he suggested them, they are also adjustable.

I have a set of used HKS III coils I need to get rid of. Rears would need to be rebuilt, but the fronts are still have some life left. Is CL actually a decent method of selling? Never used it or e-Bay before.

You can actually use both, ebay would be safer as they give you a shiit ton of buyer and seller protections and you can use paypal.

CL is really good for local buys, just be wary of buyers, just like you would in any other transaction.

He had the oem suspension and is working on his phd. Said he would like the extra cash. I had him call the original owner and the original owner had "his guy" tell him that since he didnt plan on slamming, he didnt need the rear shocks. I mean, that makes zero sense to me. I don't think you can buy just the fronts when buying new coilovers.

And the number one thing to look out for on Craigslist is people selling broken goods. Other than that, it's a great place to buy stuff locally

Basically, I'm working on college too so my options are: 1) buy these now while I have cash handy or 2) I'll be saving not bc coils which will most likely be purchased next summer. Keep in mind I don't track the car. Just occasional spirited driving.

How about you go to school, use the money to pay off your school loan debt, get a good job, learn to drive your car stock, and than buy real parts

Since you are in college, and i will assume on a budget, don't buy these coilovers. Take your 2nd option and buy a new set of coilovers when you have the proper funding.

I have Scolarships. Full ride. So I won't have any school loans. God gave me a head, I try to use it to my best ability. When I first came across these, I thought It was too good of an opportunity to miss. But the more I think about it, it just seems fishy. You guys potentially saved me a huge headache and I appreciate it.

My thoughts on it is. My car has way too many miles on it to lower it with the stock shocks. It would look better, but would ride worse most likely. So if I was to pick these up, 400 for what he has, then 400 for 2 new rear shocks, I could add another hundred dollars to that an have a brand new set of bc's with a warranty on them. Thanks for talking sense into me!
