Default Parts Shop Max: Competition VS Pro

Hi all. I'm just about to purchase coilovers and have a question for those who have had the opportunity to feel both on a Z. How is the difference in ride quality on the street?

I've had the PSM Comps (cheaper model) on an s13 an they were admittedly firmer then Stance products I have had in the past. I know most of PSMs coilovers are set up stiffer but on a S chassis the Pros are a little more forgiving day to day. Is this the case for Z33s as well?

Stiffness should be from spring rate, get the proper rates for your tires.

The rates are 12/8kg for both sets, however their product information cites using a more "linear" spring for the Pros. The Pros also have a longer stroke. Both these things can lead to a smoother street ride on paper, but has anyone on this board actually compared the two?

I used Comps for a couple years on an S13 but want to know if the $400 jump to Pros is worth it.

I am also looking at the Powered By Max Pros for my 2003 unrevised suspension.
After some searching there is a guy on here who loves his pros:

Yeah, I've read that post too. I understand they are great, but I'm looking for a direct comparison to the Comps. People will say ANY coilover is awesome especially when they are coming directly from stock suspension.

Seeing as how these are true coilovers, why are you bothering with toe bolts? You should have gotten the PBM Toe Links and just got a lockout kit.

Not going to lie, I just cheaped out. My wheel set up isn't too crazy so bolts should be plenty to get it in spec.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong but I read that bolts are better if your not too far out of spec because of how the pick up points work on the subframe? Could be total bs, not sure.

Your wheel setup has nothing to do with your toe.. It's your ride height that affects it.

And toe bolts are more prone to slipping than a proper toe arm and eccentric bolt kit, if you see how toe bolts are installed compared to toe arms/eccentric bolts it would become pretty clear.

Not saying wheel set up has anything to do with toe. I know how the arms work and how bolts can slip.

What I was saying is that I recall reading that the pick up point on the subframe (where arm bolts to chassis) is supposed to be where the alignment is adjusted from (hence toe bolt) and that locking the arm in place with lock out bolt and adjusting the length of the arm for toe is actually incorrect.

But mostly just cheaped out hahaha. I know people who drift on toe bolts just fine so I'm not sweating it. I'll upgrade to BattleVersions or SPL when I blow out the bushings on the SPCs in a year or two.

Before rolling and 27mm of spacer

After

The gap in the rear will be closed when I get an alignment. It think its sitting between -3.5 and -4 right now and I want to bring it out to around -2. The fronts are to receive 23mm of spacer after rolling.

Impressions of the coilovers. Best set I've owned yet! I've had AGX with Swift Springs, Megan, Tein, Stance, H&R, Ksports, and PBM Comps in the past. Cars include 86, x8, DC5, S13s, others. This set is only beat in comfort by the H&Rs but beats them in adjustability. The damper feeling in these things is great, just like the Comps I had on my S13. Because there is only 12 clicks of adjustment you can actually tell the difference with each turn. Right now I'm running all corners at 5 clicks. I may take it down to 3 for street driving. I can definitely say the Pros are worth the money over Comps if you'll be driving this day to day, not as harsh as Comps. I actually found myself bottoming out on driveways not being careful because I forgot I was on coils driving around town.

As for the install it went about as planned. Be sure to get a #114 or 115 dremel bit for the toe bolts or else that will take forever. I somehow managed to mess up the preload in the front and leave an inch of wheel gap even though I thought I was at max low but was able to sort it out. Final ride height is 9.5cm to front pinch welds and 10cm to the rear. Front coils can go down about 1-1.5cm more, rear can go down a lot more.

While a lot of people complain that PBMs are just more junk similar to everything else in its price range the real reason I buy them is the customer service. I've called the shop many times with various questions which are always answered in full. Also, you can buy individual parts for these things if you manage to mess them up or blow a shock.

Good stuff!
