hey guys,

so i replaced my brakes with an AP racing kit all around. more or less no problems thankfully for the flare nut wrench lol. the kit is pre-owned, pad has lots of life

after buttoning it back up, the front passenger brake disc squeals any time i turn the wheel left while the car is moving whether it is turned just a little bit or a lot it squeals

it does not squeal when going straight, or when braking, or when turning right

no other wheel squeals, and it did not squeal with the old brakes (stock non-brembo, stainless lines, no other upgrades)

i am going to re-bleed my brakes again anyway, and was wondering if you guys know what it could possibly be

it does not appear to be rubbing against anything pretty sure it is something to do with the brakes as that is what i changed, and the squeal is consistent with wheel rotations

any help or suggestions would be appreciated

edit: some searching shows hub bearing issue but that can't be the case as it was no problem just before. some subaru owners had an issue where the backing plate behind the rotor was rusty and rubbing it when turning. not really sure why it'd only happen when turning but i'll give it a shot

 

meant to update this; problem solved!

so what i found from the subaru forums was correct. when turning left, the weight of the car putting load on the right tire made the dust shield behind the rotor somehow make contact

from what i read, it's that over time (and rust) the dust shield is no longer perpendicular with the floor, and leans out toward the brakes. mine are pretty nasty and rusty, so go figure

in case anyone has this issue as well



the red line is where it was making contact. jack it up, take off the wheel, remove the brake caliper and disc

all i did was take a dead blow hammer to it at the 4 points circled, to bend it backward toward the suspension. as you hit it, you may notice the opposite corner countering your work. hold it down with your free hand

*alternatively, you could probably just completely cut away the dust shield if you like



i did the same to both, even though i did not have a problem with the driver side. as you can see, there is only millimeters of clearance. fyi my disc is 28 mm thick

hammer until you have clearance like the bottom 2 squares. put it back together and test it out

hopefully your problem will be gone like mine!
