Default Rear Sway Bar Problem

Hotchkis Front & Rear Sway Bars
Tomei Expreme Ti Exhaust
SPL Rear Differential Bushings
SPL Front & Rear Adjustable End Links

I was checking my rear tire tread , I need new front tires, wanted to see if I need rear as well. Figured I would buy a whole set if that was the case. That said I happen to notice my rear sway bar is resting on my differential bushing.

If I add length to my adjustable rear SPL sway bar end links, will this give enough space that the rear sway bar will not be resting on the differential bushing?

Or if I move the end link from the closest stiffest setting , to the farthest softest setting ?

Or if I place washers under the sway bar bushing mounts ?

Or any combination of the above ?

I do not want to raise the cars height with my coilovers.

I could buy a new rear sway bar if i have too.

Any thoughts ?

Haven't thought through the entire problem but just want to clarify your statement above.

When you say "closest" or "Farthest", from which point of the bar are you referring to? Hole closest to end is softest, moving towards middle is stiffer.

Just making sure.... sounds like that's what you meant but for others reading it, it might not be clear.

Keep in mind that any of the adjustments you listed WILL change the handling and/or effectiveness of the bars as you are talking about changing all of the adjustable points of the bar. Let me give it some more thought though or see if anyone else has experienced this.

I would think you could adjust your end links untill it's no longer touching... Wild guess but are you slammed on coilovers back their? Could probably raise the rear ride height a bit to gain some clearance.

I think trail and error and you will get it all squared away.

closest to the end is softest
farthest from the end is stiffest
it is in the stiffest position furthest from the end

i realize relocating from one hole to next changes handling

but i am willing to sacrifice where it handles in my opinion best where it is , in order to keep the bar from resting on the bushing , as it most certainly is not supposed to be making contact

thanks

I did pm terrasmak , i am certain he will know

Friday I will try all of the above and see if I can get it resolved, only hoping someone can chime in and speed up the process

thank you

slammed is subjective , i think far from slammed, but I am sure you will think it is slammed , but i do not want to raise it , i prefer to adjust 1st , even swap to another sway bar

OK, if that's the case (hole 3 currently), moving the bar ends to the middle or end hole should fix your problem as the stiffest position changes the bar's angle of attack, elevating it and causing contact with your diff bush. Backing it down should give you the few extra mm of clearance you need.

Try hole 2 first. If that fixes the problem, you might also want to adjust your front bar to re-adjust handling to your liking. Softening the rear means you should soften the front a bit to reduce any understeer - depending on where it's set now.

Reduce understeer/promote oversteer: bias the roll stiffness to a stiffer REAR

Reduce oversteer/add a little understeer: just the opposite, bias to stiffer FRONT.

Good luck!

that was my thinking as well

thank you

will of course post up the outcome in the case anyone else finds themselves in this spot, as these sway bars are common , and lowering the car is common

I need to go look at my car a bit and see just to freshen up on it.

BTW, what Endlinks are you running ?

Just to be positive, your adjustment is set to the stiffest settings?

Rear end link ^^^^^^

Front end links ^^^

Both sway bars are Hotchkis and they are set to the stiffest setting , farthest hole from the end of the bars

Well theirs your problem your coil buckets are missing... But seriously what size tires are you running? You must live in a good climate with good roads because your wheels wouldnt last a week in Massachusetts.

Its so clean under your car...

Non-sense there is 4 speed bumps in the community that I know of
very good roads here and weather
getting 235-35-19 front, 255-35-19 rear
I am sure you think they are too small

now is 225-35 F , 245-35 R , these are too small even for me

First thing, haven't even been to my car yet. Remove the washers from the fwd two mounting ears.

Second, is the pic you just posted with the wheels on the ground at ride height?

O I asked a question about 225/40/18 fronts and 245/40/18 rears once and terrasmak made fun of me haha pretty much the same size but mine wouldn't be stretched.

We have speed bumps in the middle of our highways here , and the occasional hole in the road big enough to total a car

Just looked at mine, pull the washer. The one under the bushing that the bar is hitting. My car has about a credit card of clearance, that is the difference

that would be ideal , easy , and not effect handling

bushing has been in for 2 years

that is how long it took me to notice

IMHO it can't be felt in normal daily driving

like i said i found it by accident checking my tire tread

THANK YOU

Btw, full stiff on the sway bars feel cool till you are about 7/10 of the limit, after that, just no traction.

I have been using them in those positions on this car since 2006

before that

In my Impala SS from 1996 - 2006

so for 20 years

I am so used to it this way it just feels right to me, I drive the car very conservatively , I will never even come close to 3/4 the limit

But I believe what you are saying to hold true

thank you again man
